Feature Friday with Barbara Hsiao

Job title: Director, HR & Administration

Hometown: Home-grown – Vancouver, BC

How long have you worked at LFS/UBC?

Verging on 16 years at LFS, 21 years at UBC (I’m working towards my gold watch)

What are three adjectives that describe you?

Optimistic, independent, resourceful

Let’s talk work…

What are you currently working on?

Managing various recruitments, researching change management principles and implementation of Workday.

What do you enjoy the most about working for LFS?

The work environment – the people and the relevant research and teaching that happens in LFS.

What challenge have you dealt with that you are most proud of?

My role has a lot of diversity and it has evolved over time. I’ve been in my current role since 2008 so I feel there’s a lot to be proud but if I had to pick one, it would be when we hire really good people that just fit in and really contribute to the Faculty.

Let’s get personal…

How do you like to recharge?

Going for walks, meeting up with friends, and having a good laugh

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Ability to fly as it would be cost-effective and I can avoid the hassles of going through security at airports…..though that would mean, I would miss out on inflight movies and free pretzels so I may have to rethink this….

What was a favourite vacation or trip you’ve taken?

Not counting family vacations, probably going to Coachella in Indio, CA or Osheaga in Montreal, QC.

What was the last book you read?

Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson

What’s the best meal you’ve ever had?

Recently, the Tomohawk steak at Elisa Steakhouse in Yaletown.

What’s one thing your co-workers don’t know about you?

Back in the day, I played violin in a youth orchestra and we toured Europe.
