LFS Townhall – Follow-up

Early Alert support for students
Brian Barth, Manager, Student Support Services from the VP Students Office presented at the LFS Virtual Townhall this week on Early Alert (EA). The EA Program allows student advising, faculty and support staff to clearly understand a student concern, and organize the most efficient reach-out. Here are some resources from Brian:

Orientation sessions
If you are interested in attending an EA orientation session delivered by CTLT there are upcoming sessions on February 18 and March 15. Using the online EA system can be made easy, and this session will help advisors and support staff to view the right information and apply their expertise to support a given student in the midst of academic and/or wellbeing challenges. Check out the CTLT event calendar to sign up.

Mid-course feedback
The Learning Centre would like to remind faculty that mid-course feedback is mandatory and point out resources and support to ensure the implementation of mid-course feedback is easy. Faculty & Staff Tax Slips & WorkDay Tip of the Week

UBC issues tax slips online as PDFs that are identical to the printed form and are accepted to by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) when filing your taxes.

This year, T4 tax slips (and T4As, where applicable) will be made available for faculty and staff through the Workday system before the end of February, in line with Canadian tax legislation.

Paper copies of T4s will be mailed to employees that left UBC between January 1, 2020 and October 31, 2020. Employees that left the university between November 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020 will be able to access their tax slips through Workday (please note that an active CWL ID and password are required).

Your Workday Tip of the Week answers the following question: How do I find my T4? (CWL-login required)

Tax slips from previous tax years can still be accessed through Peoplesoft.

Academics Without Borders: Call for Proposals & Information Session

UBC recently joined Academics Without Borders (AWB), a network that supports capacity-building projects in partnership with higher education institutions in developing countries, with the goal to improve their universities so that they can train their own experts and conduct research to assist in their countries’ development.

UBC’s engagement with the AWB network is a meaningful expression of our shared belief that universities can be an important force in promoting global development by collaborating with our partner institutions of higher education in the developing world as they strive to increase the capacity and quality of their programs.

About Academics Without Borders (AWB)
Academic and professional staff from the AWB’s partner institutions – a consortium of Canadian universities and colleges – contribute their time and expertise to short- and long-term projects that foster the skills and knowledge needed in areas such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and business. The projects take place in all areas in which universities are engaged, including teaching, research, and administrative operations.

Call for Project Proposals
Once per year, AWB opens a call to all members to submit proposals for a capacity building project, developed in partnership with an institution of higher education in the developing world. While projects are supported on a volunteer basis, expenses including flights, accommodations, insurance, travel, etc. are typically covered by AWB and the partner institution. Given the uncertainties regarding international travel due to the pandemic, AWB will prioritize submissions that can be implemented in whole or in part online.

The submission deadline for a first stage proposal is March 8, 2021.  More information about this call for proposals is included below.

AWB INFORMATION SESSION
To learn more about Academics Without Borders and this call for proposals, the Office of the Vice-Provost International is hosting a virtual information session on Wednesday, February 17 from 10:00am to 10:45am PST.

Speakers:

  • Corrie Young, Associate Executive Director of AWB – Corrie will provide information about AWB and this call for proposals, and answer any general or specific questions related to this opportunity.
  • Dr. Susan Critchton, Associate Dean, Faculty of Education (UBC-O), and Dr. Ray Taheri, Professor of Teaching, Faculty of Applied Science (UBC-O) – Drs. Crichton and Taheri will share more information about their experience with AWB.  They are leading an AWB project in partnership with the University for Development Studies, Ghana, to develop a Design Thinking and Making HUB to support teaching, learning and research to address community needs.
