UBC Dietetics Research Exchange: May 27

Year 5 Dietetics students will share the results of their year-long practice-based research porjects. The students will use the 3-minute thesis format, followed by a Q&A period.

Some of the research topics being presented:

  • What is the evidence for SLP and RD collaboration in out-patient dysphagia management in reducing risk of malnutrition in moderate and severe dysphagia population? 
  • What is the usage (types and dosage) of phosphate binders for the management of hyperphosphatemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients in Canada? 
  • What is the prevalence of weight bias among registered dietitians working in acute care hospitals in Fraser Health Authority (FH) within British Columbia (BC).
  • What are the effective strategies to support a safe transition for patients identified with malnutrition in acute care during hospital admission back into the community?
  • What patient-related characteristics are likely to increase risk of requiring enteral feeding among head and neck cancer patients before during or after dual modality treatment?
  • Is exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) as effective as pharmacotherapy (i.e biologics or corticosteroid medications) for inducing remission in adult patients with active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)?
  • Do weight patterns exist in persons living in LTC and if so, do they relate to health outcomes?
  • What is working well and what are the gaps with the UBC Dietetics Major Admissions Process with regards to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion?
  • A description of the prevalence of refeeding syndrome in hospitalized populations, its associated morbidity and mortality, and current best practice treatment guidelines.
  • Does weight loss prior to hip or knee replacement, affect clinical outcomes?

 

Submit a Proposal to the Killam Connection Program by March 29

The Killam Connection program provides up to $25,000 to enable UBC faculty to host an innovative and interdisciplinary research forum and graduate course focused around a theme of general interest and public importance, and including a series of invited scholars. The purpose of the Killam Connection is to provide an opportunity for faculty to engage with leading scholars on matters of importance, and for students to gain experience developing and possibly implementing scholarly products oriented to impact beyond academy.

Faculty members from UBC Vancouver may submit a Letter of Intent by 4pm on Monday, March 29, 2021.

UBC Employees Commuting Patterns Survey

Please support the following SEEDS Sustainability research project by completing a short 3 minutes survey. A group of graduate students in the Master of Engineering Leadership program is conducting a survey on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on UBC employees’ commuting pattern to work. The project’s aim is to gain an understanding of the long term impact to employees’ commuting pattern and provide their findings to support future transportation policies at UBC.

Learn How to Foster Cultural Appreciation in Nutrition and Dietetics: Panel Discussion

For National Nutrition Month, join a panel discussion on Fostering Cultural Appreciation in Nutrition and Dietetics.

Panelists include registered dietitians Kim Rose, Michelle Jaelin, Joby Quiambao, as well as nutritionist Idil Farah, with Rosie Mensah as the moderator. Together, they will explore and reflect on the value of cultural foods, strategies on building cultural competency and anti-oppression in nutrition practice, and their experiences navigating cultural knowledge in a profession that has historically centred eurocentric experiences, foods, and foodways.
