News: Fall award season is coming up! (action by June 16, 2025)

As mentioned at the May 28 LFS Community meeting, the LFS Faculty Research Awards Committee is here to help faculty members gain recognition for their research and mentoring. The Committee focuses its efforts on increasing awareness of awards and generating nominations, leading to greater success in winning prominent awards.

What’s coming up? The Committee wants to bring your attention to these upcoming awards that are open to both early-stage and experienced researchers. As LFS is limited to recommending one (a,c below) or two candidates (b,d below) for these awards, nominations for each of these awards require approval from the Dean’s Office to go forward, and we want to hear from you, if interested:

(a) Killam Accelerator Research Fellowships (faculty must be within 15 years of obtaining their PhD)

(b) Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring (mid- and senior career categories available)

(c) UBC Distinguished Scholar (full-time tenured UBC faculty members in the research or educational leadership streams; active IRCs, CRCs and Endowed Chairs not eligible)

(d) John McNeill Excellence in Health Research Mentorship Award

Supporting Statements: (Deadline is June 16, 2025)

If you believe there is good potential, we encourage you to send us your name or the name of someone in LFS who may meet the criteria for these awards. Please include a SUPPORTING STATEMENT (maximum 1 page in length – to include 1.Short bio; 2. Rational for nomination; 3. How does the candidate meet the award criteria; and, 4. Previous Awards). The Committee will evaluate these STATEMENTS and provide feedback. The Committee will also review and assess which candidates will be endorsed by the Dean’s Office to go forward with a full nomination.

Please send any Supporting Statements or questions you have to [lfs.research@ubc.ca].

In addition, many awards allow for self-nominations or peer nominations (i.e., they do not require the Dean’s Office to approve candidates). If you want to learn more about the varied internal and external awards, visit the Office of Research Prizes and Awards:
