Final Grade Submission Deadlines

Reminder to all instructors to be mindful of grade submission deadlines for term 2 courses; as per the FSC User Guide, page 16, grades are due 7 business days after exam date, unless the exam occurs within last 2 days of the exam period – then, the grades are due within 5 calendar days. Adherence to these deadlines is critical for processing of graduation applications, sessional evaluations, award adjudications, etc. Also, if you are supervising students with any outstanding Directed Studies, Undergrad Thesis, practicum, etc. please be sure to have those grades submitted to students@landfood.ubc.ca by April 30, 2021 but no later than May 6, 2021.

‘Change of Grade’ forms for when grades need to be changed can be generated via the FSC and sent as an attachment to students@landfood.ubc.ca.

If you are emailing Student Services directly with a request to update or post a grade, please include all of the following details:

  1. Student name
  2. Student number
  3. Course name & number
  4. Session when the course was completed

Building Security – As more people are on UBC Campus, our buildings are still closed to the public and are reserved for restricted users. Please ensure that you do not let unknown people into the buildings and check that doors are closed/locked after entry. If you observe any suspicious behavior, please contact UBC Campus Security at 604-822-2222.

Resumption of Fire Drills – UBC Fire Life and Safety (FLS) and Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services have both confirmed that UBC can resume the scheduling of annual fire drills in occupied buildings on the campus.  Non-medical masks must be worn during the drills in accordance with the Campus Rules as occupants will be moving through common indoor spaces. To schedule a fire drill, please follow the instructions provided on page 30 of the BERP. If you have any questions about conducting fire drills, email safety.programs@ubc.ca.
Please remember: During an actual emergency event, as stated in the BERP Amendment, physical distancing is not required as the primary objective is ensure all occupants evacuate the building in an swift and orderly fashion.

Random Acts of Recognition

Congratulations to these students who have been nominated for Random Acts of Recognition for putting in extra effort:

Savi Raghuraman, Dennis Chiu and Sadie Larter who did an outstanding job on processing, organizing and shipping greenyard waste samples. We’re lucky to have such responsible and reliable work-learn students in our lab!

Megan Leong and Michelle Hung who supported the LFS Development team in preparation for Giving Day. Thank you for all of your hard work on our social media!

To nominate a faculty member, staff or graduate student that’s been doing an outstanding job or has gone above and beyond in some way, send an email to lfs.recognition@ubc.ca and tell us why this person should be recognized. We’ll send them a $6 Starbucks gift card and acknowledge their good work in LFS Today.

VPRI Town Halls: Impacts of COVID on Research/Scholarly Activities

The UBC Office of the VP, Research & Innovation (VPRI) has scheduled a series of virtual town halls in April and May to hear from UBC faculty members about the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 on their research and scholarly activities and programs. The aim is to better understand how the university can help both internally and by working with appropriate external bodies, such as funding agencies.

The town halls are open to all UBC faculty members and are organized around Tri-agency areas as a way to hear from sections of our research community facing similar challenges. The town halls will run from April 27 to May 10.

Registration will be limited to 75 people for each session to facilitate more meaningful online dialogue. There are 6 sessions – two focusing on each Tri-agency area to bring together researchers with similar issues. Dates as follows:

  • CIHR # 1 April 27, 3:00–4:30 p.m.
  • CIHR #2 May 10, 10:00–11:30 a.m.

NSERC Alliance and Mitacs Accelerate Streamlined Funding Opportunity

NSERC and Mitacs are pleased to build on the success of their existing partnership with a new joint initiative that will support the R&D efforts of Canadian university researchers and their partners, while supporting highly qualified personnel including students and/or postdoctoral fellows.

Through NSERC’s Alliance grants and Mitacs’s Accelerate, this new opportunity is available to Canadian researchers through a single application submission and review process. Applicants are invited to include in their Alliance application a request for additional support through Mitacs Accelerate internships as a component of the training of highly qualified personnel.

Alliance grants support university researchers to collaborate with partner organizations, which can be from the private, public or not-for-profit sectors, on their R&D efforts that will create economic, social and/or environmental benefits to Canada.

Accelerate puts the talent of students and postdocs to work with a paid internship at an industry or non-for-profit organization that needs their expertise.

Alliance-Accelerate applications require the following information when outlining the training of highly qualified personnel:

  • A description of the role of the Mitacs interns in the research project and an explanation of the quality of the research-based training experiences provided to the interns
  • A description of how the internship partnership organization is committed to providing supervision and mentorship to the interns
  • An explanation of how the number of Mitacs interns and the number of internship units are appropriate to the scope of the project

Applicants who wish to include Mitacs Accelerate internships in their Alliance application should contact Marcelo Mora (mmora@mitacs.ca) to obtain the NSERC/Mitacs joint application form. Applicants must submit the NSERC/Mitacs joint application form to NSERC with their Alliance proposal.

For more information please visit the NSERC Alliance/Mitacs Accelerate Grants webpage.
