Using the LFS VPN

To improve network security, we are encouraging LFS faculty and staff to connect to the LFS VPN instead of the UBC general VPN when working off campus. When connected, the LFS VPN places your computer within the LFS firewall. This is helpful as it lets us limit access to LFS applications that contain sensitive and private data to LFS users, improving protection.

Connecting to the LFS VPN is similar to the general UBC VPN, the difference is the addition of a suffix to your login name. We have detailed instructions on how to connect on the Learning Centre’s website: https://lc.landfood.ubc.ca/connecting-to-the-lfs-vpn/.

Starting August 3, 2022 at 1PM, connecting to the LFS VPN will also require Duo two factor authentication. LFS is an early adopter for this enhanced CWL login service that will be rolled out to other UBC departments in the near future.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at it@landfood.ubc.ca.

Aug. 8 to 10 – Annual Office Inspection in MCML

The LFS operations team will be conducting the annual office inspection in the MCML building on August 8 to 10, 2022. The team will go around and inspect each office in the building for deficiencies and/or safety hazards. We will make sure to knock on the door before entering and should not take more than 5 minutes per office.

If you are teaching or in a meeting at your office on those dates, we ask that you post a note such as “in a meeting” on your door to avoid interruptions.

If you prefer to be present when we conduct the safety inspection, please email us at lfs.facilities@ubc.ca with a date/time that works for you.

If you have any questions regarding the annual office inspection, contact lfs.facilities@ubc.ca.

Sept. 15 – Health in Unexpected Places – Funding Opportunity

UBC Health is inviting interdisciplinary teams who are undertaking innovative health-oriented research in faculties, schools, or departments that stretches beyond the usual or expected to participate in Health After 2020.

The Health After 2020 program enables researchers to engage in interdisciplinary, cross-institutional collaborations that aim to create change in health and health producing systems.

The 2022/23 theme for Health After 2020 is Health in Unexpected Places. Health is not only the absence of disease but an attribute of individuals, communities, and societies that is vital for daily living. Health is shaped by a wide range of determinants, from individual genetics and risk factors to social and environmental exposures, education, work, and social and economic position. Health-oriented research exists in surprising and unexpected places across every faculty, school, and department at UBC—demonstrating that improving health and wellbeing extends beyond the health disciplines.

UBC Health offers funding of up to $10,000 to support program participants in starting or extending a collaborative relationship with a scholar or collaborator from outside UBC. Funds may be used to deliver Health After 2020 dialogue sessions and cover expenses for external collaborators to travel to Vancouver or the Okanagan.

The call for proposals for Health After 2020 is open to faculty members at UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan until September 29, 2022. For more information, visit https://health.ubc.ca/interdisciplinary-health-research/health-after-2020.
