Follow-up from LFS Community Meeting – Green Labs, ISP, Counselling

In case you missed the LFS Community Meeting yesterday, here are some follow-up items:

  • Presentation from Kate Andrews, Green Labs Program Lead at UBC Campus and Community Planning. UBC’s Green Labs Program is not only an important contributor to UBC’s Climate Emergency response, but it also represents an opportunity for improved lab performance and professional development for those working and studying in labs.   • Indigenous Strategic Plan (ISP): LFS Unit-Level Engagement Process with ISP Self-Assessment Tool from Will Valley, Associate Dean, EDI. As Will noted, the milestones for LFS units to complete the Self-Assessment are below. Do reach out to Will if you have questions during this process will.valley@ubc.ca and further reminders will be posted in LFS Today throughout the next six months.
  • October 3, 2022 – 100% of LFS units have submitted an ISP Self-Evaluation timeline to the Associate Dean, EDI
  • January 09, 2023 – 50% of units have completed the ISP Self-Evaluation / 50% of units in LFS have completed 50% of the ISP Self-Evaluation
  • March 31, 2022 – 100% of units in LFS have completed the ISP Self-Evaluation
  • Nicole Adoranti supports both undergraduate and graduate students as the Embedded Counsellor to both Land and Food Systems and Forestry. Nicole is a Canadian Certified Counsellor and provides single session or short-term counselling, triage and referrals to students, while also promoting mental health through the development of wellness programming. Today – Thesis Defense, Food Science PhD – Kaiwen Wu

You’re invited to watch Kaiwen Wu’s oral defense for their Food Science PhD. The topic will be the Role of Phenolic Acids on Intestinal Epithelial Cell Signaling and Functionality.

Time: Thursday, August 25th, 2022 – 10:00 AM
Place: Room 350, HR MacMillan Building

Approximately 30 audience members will be allowed. The Examining Committee chair is Dr. M. Von Keyserlingk.

Sept. 7 – Save the Date: CPS Announcement for Preliminary Proposals

On Wednesday, September 7, 2022, the Center for Produce Safety will announce research priorities and a call for preliminary proposals! Details will be stated within the announcement and posted to the CPS Grant Opportunities webpage. New this year, opportunities for scientists to visit industry facilities while they are preparing a proposal. They will again provide Office Hours for scientists to answer their questions about industry practices and the proposal process.

Deadlines

Oct. 4 -Transforming Health with Integrated Care – Implementation Science Teams Grants

SSHRC has agreed to fund a partnership research project through a funding opportunity administered by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Transforming Health with Integrated Care – Implementation Science Teams Grants. SSHRC will support, in collaboration with CIHR, an interdisciplinary project that will incorporate social science and humanities methodologies to improve our understanding of the socioeconomic and psychosocial context of underrepresented or historically excluded groups and/or Indigenous Peoples, in order to implement equitable, diverse and inclusive integrated systems/models of care that address their needs.

Key Details

  • $2M over 5 years is available to fund one application relevant to the Interdisciplinary Approaches to Equitable, Diverse and Inclusive Integrated Care.

Aug. 1/23 – Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative

SSHRC is extending the Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative to continue helping the Canadian social sciences and humanities research community better understand data management and incorporate data management considerations into research practices. This initiative will continue to fund at least ten meritorious Connection Grants proposals per competition to support the research community’s development, adoption and dissemination of research data management standards, practices, tools and skills appropriate to their field.

SSHRC will accept applications for the Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative until August 1, 2023.
