Are you prepared for an emergency?

Safety & Risk Services, Emergency Management team will be setting up a booth from September 6 to 8, 2022 to help increase the campus community’s resilience, emergency awareness and preparedness!

Stop by the Emergency Management booth on Imagine UBC on September 6 to learn more about emergency preparedness and the resources available to plan and prepare for emergency situations. Visit us on September 7 and 8 to ride the Quake Cottage, an earthquake simulator to provide an educational experience of what it is like to go through a major earthquake and how to prepare.

  • September 6: Find our Emergency Preparedness booth on Imagine UBC @ Main Mall, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
  • September 7-8: Ride the Quake Cottage, an earthquake simulator @ University Commons outside the Nest, 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

Emergencies happen, and as UBC students, faculty, and staff, we all have a role to play in emergency preparedness. That’s why it’s important for each and every one of you to have the tools and know-how to respond appropriately.

Ensuring a safe start to the 2022/23 academic year

As you know, we are about to begin the 2022/23 academic year. Whether you are a student, faculty or staff, we hope you enjoy the energy that comes with the start of winter session.

We are aware that members of our community may have questions related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As we announced in June of this year, UBC no longer requires students, faculty and staff to wear non-medical masks, but we continue to recommend that masks be worn in indoor public spaces.

As a reminder, students, faculty and staff who take part in academic activities in health settings on campus or outside of university campuses may still be required to wear a mask if mandated by a Public Health Order.

This approach reflects advice from our internal experts and public health guidance, as well as discussions with student leaders, Deans, Senate Planning Committee and unions, and is in alignment with other BC public post-secondary institutions.

We also want to take this opportunity to remind you of the safety measures we can all take:

  • Know the symptoms of COVID-19 and complete a daily health assessment. If you are sick, stay at home. Learn about the self-assessment tool at https://bc.thrive.health.
  • Wash your hands regularly.
  • Follow the measures outlined in the COVID-19 Campus Rules. You can learn more at https://srs.ubc.ca/covid-19/ubc-campus-rules-guidance-documents.
  • We strongly recommend that all UBC community members get vaccinated and if eligible, receive their booster dose. You can learn more at https://immunizebc.ca.
  • Don’t forget, in BC, free vaccines are available to students arriving from international destinations and other provinces.

UBC will continue to monitor the situation regarding COVID-19, and is well placed to adjust its approach should circumstances change. Wishing you a safe and successful start to the academic year.

Sept. 2 – Join the LFS Social Committee – create a ‘buzz’ at LFS events!

As the summer winds down and we look forward to the start of term, we’re looking for individuals interested in spearheading our LFS Social Committee! Do you like to socialize and mingle with colleagues? Want more events where we can break bread with your co-workers? Those interested in helping to create, plan or organize our Faculty social events can contact either Barbara Hsiao (Barbara.hsiao@ubc.ca) or Karen Lee (Karen.lee98@ubc.ca). Current events include the Faculty/Staff Sports Day, the Faculty’s Holiday Party, and the first order of buzz-i-ness will be our LFS Welcome Back Fall event. Given the overwhelming success of the Welcome Back event last year at UBC Farm, we are looking for keen individuals to help out again. Let’s reinforce why we’re known as the Friendly Faculty!

Contact Barbara or Karen before Friday, Sept. 2 to get involved in the LFS Social Committee.
