Sean Smukler was quoted in an article about how floodwaters may have affected soil in the Fraser Valley: “Those pollutants may not be on site anymore. They actually might be in our nearby aquatic ecosystems.” CBC

Cold Stress Awareness Course

With cold temperatures arriving, a new “Cold Stress Awareness” course has been released.  It is recommended that all workers that are at risk of cold exposure and their supervisors complete this course.  For more information on cold stress, visit the SRS Website.

Today – IOF Seminar: Salmon from freshwater to the ocean: there and back again

In this webinar, we bring together leading experts with a range of expertise in and perspectives on the salmon life stages. The webinar will also provide a forum to discuss responses and actions that are needed at individual, community and governmental levels to address this important topic.

The webinar will be followed by a Q&A and discussion between the speakers, invited community partners, and seminar participants.

Dec. 20 – Envisioning Equality Public Art Project

To celebrate the accomplishments and contributions made by women and gender-diverse faculty and staff, the Envisioning Equality project will harness the transformative power of art in public space to highlight and celebrate exceptional women and gender-diverse faculty and staff of the UBC community. The project activates new perspectives on their roles and contributions through a series of banners designed by local artists. These will be displayed on UBC campus poles.

Five eligible faculty members and five eligible staff members who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to their individual academic/professional practice and significant impact through mentoring and community engagement will be featured on the artistic banners.

Candidates can be nominated via a letter (maximum two pages) that describes the nominee’s professional accomplishments, and involvement in and impact on mentoring and community service/impact.

Nominations are due by Dec. 20, 2021.

Feb. 1 – IDRC Research Awards 2022-2023

This year IDRC will offer research awards related to these development areas or themes: Climate-Resilient Food Systems, Democratic and Inclusive Governance, Education and Science, Ethics in Development Research, Global Health, Policy and Evaluation, and Sustainable Inclusive Economies.

If your research proposal is selected, you will join IDRC as a Research award recipient for a period of 12 months from 1 May 2022 to 30 April 2023 with a salary in Canadian dollars between CA$42,033 to CA$48,659 to undertake research on the topic you have submitted. You will receive hands-on experience in research and program management and support, grant administration, and the creation, dissemination, and use of knowledge from an international perspective.
