UBC president presents early vision for Surrey campus

Ideas include expanding medical, dentistry and other health practice programs to take advantage of proximity to Surrey Memorial Hospital.

University of B.C. president Santa Ono took deans from the faculties of medicine, science, as well as land and food systems, to a Surrey Board of Trade lunch on Tuesday.

COVID-19 forced rapid changes in education, but which changes should we keep?

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit North America in the spring of 2020, safety considerations quickly turned in-person classes fully remote.

Dr. Maja Krzic was featured as the Editor of Natural Science Education (NSE) journal, speaking about the impacts on high school and post-secondary education, and how we can change education for the better in a rapidly evolving world.

Seasonal shutdown: Before you leave for the holidays… 

Every action counts! This holiday season help save energy as part of UBC’s Seasonal Shutdown, which lowers the temperature in buildings during the winter break to reduce energy use and emissions on campus.

Simple actions like turning off and unplugging electronic equipment and turning off lights save thousands of dollars each year and help reduce UBC’s energy footprint. Before you leave for the holidays:

  • Switch off electronics
  • Unplug small appliances
  • Turn off the lights
  • Close windows and blinds
  • Report any air or water leaks
  • Shut fume hood sashes
  • Shut down non-essential lab equipment

Jan. 13 & 20 – UBC Wellbeing: Understanding Mental Health

Understanding mental health can be difficult. Learning how to support someone who might be in a mental health crisis can be even more challenging. The goal of this session is to increase mental health literacy while providing tools and skills to respond effectively in a caring and respectful way.

Participants will:

  • Learn to better understand mental health and mental illness
  • Understand structural and social stigma as barriers to seeking help
  • Learn how to respond when concerned about a family member, friend or colleague

Dec. 22 – Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF)

CFREF aims to boost the strengths of Canadian postsecondary institutions so that they can achieve global success in research areas that create long-term social and economic advantages for Canada. Each institution is limited to one application. The total funding envelope is $1.4 billion. There is no maximum funding request per application and funded projects receive seven years of funding.

Feb. 18 – Killam Teaching Prize – Calls for Nominations 2021-2022

The Killam Teaching Prize is awarded to acknowledge outstanding teaching and learning contributions made by teaching faculty in LFS. Among the criteria taken into consideration while nominating a Faculty Member will be the ability to motivate students and stimulate critical thinking, sustained teaching excellence and development of innovative approaches to teaching methodology and curricula.

Do you know a teacher that has inspired you?  Nominate them for the Killam Teaching Prize.

Nominations are being accepted until Feb 18th on a webform and can be made by anybody. Nominees will be contacted and invited to submit their Killam submission package by Feb 27th. The prizes will be awarded on recommendation of the Killam selection committee of faculty and students.
