Pacific Agriculture Show – sign up by tomorrow!

The Pacific Agriculture Show is coming up January 27-29, 2022 at the Abbotsford Tradex Exhibition Centre.

The Faculty and the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm will have a 10×10 booth for the three days and we are opening the booth to showcase faculty research to the producers who attend. If faculty members, lab staff or graduate students would like to volunteer for a 3-4 hour shift to meet-and-greet agriculture show attendees, they are welcome to join the booth!

We’ve set up a sign-up sheet – please sign up for the booth by Dec. 22: https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8BPQRm2fE4wdjxQ

Your lab or research group can provide promotional materials – providing background about your work and/or including a call-to-action for show attendees – as well as research slides (up to 5) for our screen display.

If you have any questions, please contact Karen Lee (Karen.lee98@ubc.ca).

Tech Tip Tuesday – Setting up iClicker Cloud

iClicker questions are a good way to poll your students in a synchronous classroom and break the flow of a lecture to bring back students’ attention. With the shift to iClicker Cloud, instructors can now run iClicker without needing an extra remote, straight from the iClicker Cloud Desktop application. iClicker Cloud can also be used in an online/hybrid classroom with Zoom. You need to share your entire screen instead of the individual application (powerpoint, Adobe Acrobat) for visibility of the iClicker Cloud poll online.
You can set up iClicker Cloud for your course by following these steps: https://lthub.ubc.ca/guides/iclicker-cloud-instructor-guide/
Students can be provided with this iClicker guide for their setup: https://lthub.ubc.ca/guides/iclicker-cloud-student-guide/

Jan. 17, 22, 23, 29 – Instructional Skills Workshops for Grad Students

This 4-day workshop (24-hour) consists of teaching practice, theory application, and topical sessions specifically relevant to Teaching Assistants and Graduate Students at UBC. During the workshop you will teach 3 short lessons and receive feedback from your peers. You will work closely with peers and trained facilitators (who are themselves UBC graduate students). In this supportive atmosphere you will have a chance to begin to develop new teaching skills, to enhance existing skills, and/or to try new and challenging ideas. This workshop is being offered in a special ONLINE format to accommodate distance learning and to meet the rapidly changing needs of TAs and graduate student instructors as a result of this shift to online education and will therefore focus on online instruction.

Participants do not need to be extraordinarily technology-proficient to be successful in this workshop. An introduction to all technologies used within the workshop will be provided.

Upcoming Dates:

  • Meeting 1: Monday, Jan. 17, 4-6 PM
  • Meeting 2: Saturday, Jan. 22, 9:00 AM – 3 PM

Jan. 26 & Feb. 3 – UBC Wellness: Self and Community Care: Building Skills to Manage Stress

We don’t always take the time to care for and nurture ourselves and we sometimes require support in integrating relaxation and our personal needs into daily life. This 2-part facilitated webinar focuses on increasing mental health literacy for individuals.

Participants will learn about the body’s stress response and how to identify these responses in themselves. They will have an opportunity to take a stress index, explore what self and community care means to them and identify key UBC resources that can be engaged to support work life integration and positive mental health.

Part 1: January 26
Part 2: February 3, 2022
(Please attend both sessions)
