Annual Seasonal Shutdown and Holiday Tips

Before leaving for this holiday season, help save energy and keep valuables safe by taking some simple actions:

  • Switching off electronics
  • Closing and locking office and exterior building doors & windows
  • Turning off the lights
  • Turning off office lights and electronic equipment
  • Unplugging small appliances
  • Locking away portable equipment, tools, laptops and any external data devices
  • Closing windows and blinds
  • Closing blinds and curtains
  • Reporting any air or water leaks
  • Locking valuable personal property out of sight or taking it home
  • Shutting fume hood sashes
  • Ensuring all your data devices are encrypted for security
  • Shutting down non-essential lab equipment
  • Protecting your building and office keys at all times to prevent risk to your workspace.

Preparing for Extreme Winter Weather at UBC

As per the Snow Policy, if UBC is subject to extreme winter weather conditions, the administration may decide to cancel or reschedule classes and/or curtail non-essential services. You are advised to regularly check the following website: https://www.ubc.ca/ in the event of extreme weather.

Building Operations offers ice prevention and snow removal services.  Visit Building Operation’s snow plan webpage for see a map that identifies priority roads, sidewalks and pathways when dealing with an ice or snow event.

Building Operations’ custodial staff work in concert with the municipal services staff to clear and salt the main access to campus buildings, stairs, and external work areas such as loading docks.  Priority is focused on main building and accessible entranceways so please use main entranceways during extreme weather. If you see any areas that require the attention of Building Operations, please contact the Service Centre at 604-822-2173.

Dec. 6 – Transforming food systems for better nutrition, health, and prosperity for all: An event in support of the Tokyo N4G Summit

This event also aims to heighten global awareness, momentum, and actions toward delivering on the promise of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Participants are invited to share their feedback and join the programme’s Q&A session!

This event will be conducted in English with simultaneous translation provided in Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.

The 3M National Teaching Fellowship recognizes exceptional contributions to teaching and learning at Canadian universities.  The nomination package is due to Dr. Simon Bates (simon.bates@ubc.ca) on Friday December 10, 2021.

Jan. 4 – Mushrooms Canada Seeking New Research Opportunities

Mushrooms Canada is developing a long-term research strategy and is seeking input from institutions and other stakeholders for potential research projects.

Projects between one and five years in duration will be preferred, however longer-term projects will be considered.

Submission deadline is January 4, 2022 at 4:00pm EST.
