Reminders and Resources from your LFS JOHSC

The LFS Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC) would like to share the following reminders and resources with you:

COVID-19 and Contact Tracing
There have been a lot of questions around how contact tracing works.  To provide clarity, the SRS site has posted some FAQ that will hopefully answer many of the overarching questions.

Confined Spaces and Refusal of Unsafe Work
A confined space is enclosed or partially enclosed with limited or restricted means of entry or exit. Although big enough for a worker to enter, it is not designed for continuous human occupancy (i.e.: sewers, pits, boilers, tanks, and hoppers). If you work with confined spaces, it is important to receive proper training and understand the associated risks. Read more here and learn about refusal of unsafe work here.

Flu Clinics
Due to a nationwide shortage in this year’s flu vaccine, the regular UBC flu clinics on the Vancouver campus will not be taking place.  You can find more information about how to get vaccinated on or near the UBC Vancouver campus by visiting the UBC HR Website.  If you are currently working or studying remotely, it is recommended that you get vaccinated at a clinic near you. You can find more information about local clinics on the ImmunizeBC Website.

CAIRS Reporting
CAIRS is the Centralized Accident/Incident Reporting System used at UBC to report incidents and near misses. Encourage everyone to report to CAIRS within 48 hours of the accident/incident occurrence so that a preliminary investigation can be completed within 48 hours as required by section 71 of the Workers Compensation Act. It is important to conducting a full investigation within 30 days of the occurrence as required by section 72 of the Workers Compensation Act.

Sustainable Food Systems Roundtable Meeting

CSFS is chairing the upcoming Sustainable Food Systems Roundtable meeting on Dec 7. Registration is required – please see the invitation link below.

Sustainable Food Systems Roundtable December Meeting: Talking Extension in BC
This has been quite a year! COVID-19, systemic racism and climate change have highlighted shortcomings in our food system: from biodiversity loss to food shortages, now more than ever we must work together to strengthen our current food system.

The role of education and extension play a crucial role in disseminating the latest information to build resilience and success.

Join us for a virtual meeting to learn more about what is currently being done, how BC groups are making research available to farmers, and to share your input and network with others in BC’s sustainable food system. We will then look forward and plan together of how we will connect and collaborated into 2021.

Monday, December 7 | 1:00-2:30 p.m.
Hosted on Zoom | Registration Required

About the Roundtable:
The Sustainable Food Systems Roundtable is an open community of people and organizations working at the provincial level to make BC’s food system more sustainable. The roundtable meets once per quarter, with a rotating mix of hosts and partners coming together to share their work and learn about what’s new in food systems.

About this session’s Chair:
The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm is a teaching and research centre and local-to-global food hub working towards a more sustainable, food-secure future. We are a member of the Roundtable and we are looking forward to chairing this December meeting.

(The Chair changes for each quarterly meeting. If you are interested in Chairing the next meeting, please contact Melanie Kuxdorf @ the CSFS (melanie.kuxdorf@ubc.ca).)

Saturday is World Soils Day

This Saturday, December 5th is World Soils Day!

We are celebrating the UN World Soils Day and the City of Vancouver’s Proclamation for Vancouver Soil Day!

Soils are the foundation for sustainable communities. While we know a lot about soils, there is plenty more we have yet to understand about the flourishing world of dirt beneath our feet.

Learn more about your neighbourhood’s soils through this handy map of Vancouver soils, created by many in the LFS family:  https://vancouversoils.ca/

Fun Facts:

  • Did you know that it’s important to amend your garden soil each year due to erosion from wind and water?
  • Cover cropping and leaf mulch can improve your soil fertility
  • Did you know that soil is composed of particles of sand, silt and clay?

Some tips for healthy soil:

  • Support organic practices for agriculture/ food growing
  • Don’t use pesticides in your garden! Try going organic.
  • Rather than raking up every leaf and twig in your garden, allow organic matter to breakdown over the winter and enrich your soil. Add compost to further build up organic composition and encourage micro-organisms to flourish.

Support Local Restaurants and Immigrant Families

The “Feast for MOSAIC Families” is a new initiative looking to help both local restaurants struggling through a winter with COVID-19 and new immigrant/refugee families to Vancouver.

By purchasing a gift card to some of Vancouver’s best known restaurants, you will be supporting those restaurants with your purchase, and MOSAIC will then distribute those gift cards to families who are new to our city, who have limited resources, and who are looking to make connections and explore Vancouver through food.

MOSAIC is an organization that provides invaluable support for immigrants and newcomers to BC, including employment, language and settlement services, training, counselling and practical resources such as clothing and tools.

Participating restaurants which you can purchase a gift card to include:

If you want to donate directly to MOSAIC to support their programs for children and families, youth, and seniors, visit www.mosaicbc.org.
