CIHR Virtual Engagement Sessions to Discuss the Approach for CIHR’s Anti-Racism Action Plan

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is inviting members of the health research community who identify as members of communities marginalized by racism to participate in virtual sessions to discuss how CIHR can help address systemic racism in the health research funding system. The purpose of these sessions is to seek feedback on our proposed approach for CIHR’s anti-racism action plan to help achieve meaningful impact.

The sessions will take place via videoconference. Each session will be three hours in duration and have a maximum of 16 participants.

To express interest in participating in a session, please complete this survey: https://ca1se.voxco.com/SE/94/virtual_engagement/. The deadline to complete this survey is Monday, February 28, 2022.

Please also note, in recognition of the distinct history, experiences and rights of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, CIHR will be engaging with Indigenous stakeholders separately. More details will be shared when available.

CIHR and their External Advisory Committee on Anti-Racism will use the insight gained from these sessions, along with lessons learned from partner and community engagement activities, literature, and international best practices, to finalize the CIHR anti-racism action plan.

If you have any questions or would prefer to share input with CIHR by email, please contact: edi@cihr-irsc.gc.ca

Today – Lunch & Learn Series: Illustrating for Science Communication

This session will be held today, February 11, 2022 at noon. Lewis Fausak (Education & Research Support Technician, Applied Biology) and Duncan McHugh (LFS Learning Centre) will be the presenters this week.

In this session, Lewis will explain how he became involved in sharing science communication through art, diagrams, and figures. He’ll discuss the process he takes to creating images, as well as the tools used. Images will be showcased from his Instagram Adventures in Soil, prize winning soil booklets The Carbon Crystal Heist and The Beetles: A Salty Soil Journey, and images and figures created for the Canadian Society of Soil Science open source textbook Digging into Canadian Soils: An Introduction to Soil Science.

Join Lewis and Duncan this Friday to learn and discuss how you can improve your science communication by creating thoughtful images using intuitive and inexpensive tools and programs. Duncan will go over a range of options, from basic to advanced, and Lewis will give a live demo of his process using ProCreate.

If you have an image you want to create, email lewis.fausak@ubc.ca with additional details and several inspiration images.

Innovation of cereal plant-based milk alternatives using enzyme technology
February 16, 2022 – 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. EST

Plant, cereal and nut-based milks now make up 10 percent of the overall milk market as consumers look to improve their health & wellness, explore novel flavours and prioritize sustainability and animal welfare. When it comes to formulating new plant-based milk alternatives, process optimization is key to delivering a product that has the organoleptic properties consumers crave while supporting improved nutrition and sustainable manufacturing. This speaker session will introduce the process of manufacturing cereal-based milk alternatives and will highlight how enzymes can be used to optimize the production process in order to create unique and crave-worthy flavour and texture profiles in the dairy alternative space.
