Feb. 24 – Webinar: Collaborative Variety Trials Results

Join us for this session to talk about the 2021 trials from across Canada

February 24, 2022, 10 am EST

Speakers: Solveig Hansen, Postdoctoral Fellow, Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm & Helen Jensen, Research Program Manager for the Bauta Initiative and Adjunct Professor at Bishop’s University

As part of the CANOVI program, growers across Canada have been trialling, evaluating, and recording data on important crop varieties like carrots, red bell peppers, radicchio, and rutabaga. This is the first project of its kind in Canada, creating a large network of agro-ecological growers who, together, are able to fill gaps in our knowledge about what these crops can do in their climates and with their farm practices.

This webinar is for everyone who has participated in the CANOVI program, farmers who are interested in doing on-farm variety trials and plant breeding, and market gardeners who want to learn more about which crop varieties will perform best in their regions.

Register for the event here.

Mar. 4 – Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award – Calls open for 2022 Nominations (Updated Deadline)

In recognition of the valuable role that Teaching Assistants play in our programs, UBC annually awards nineteen Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards. The calls for nominations for the Killam GTA Award for the Faculty of Land and Food Systems are open and can be submitted by any student, faculty or staff who have worked closely with the TA they are nominating.

Eligibility: The award is open to any UBC Graduate Teaching Assistant who acts or has acted in this position at UBC Vancouver during the current and/or preceding academic year (2021-22 and/or 2020-21).

Nomination Process: Nominations are encouraged from faculty supervisors (professors, senior laboratory instructors) of the Graduate Teaching Assistant nominee, from colleagues working closely with the nominee, and from the students who attended the nominee’s class or laboratory. TAs can also self-nominate for the award. Nominations are being collected via a webform.

Nominations can be submitted until Friday, March 4th, 2022. On receiving a nomination, the nominees will be required to submit their nomination packages to Melanie Train by March 11th, 2022. More information on the award criteria and the nomination form can be found on the Killam GTA Award page. Support letters are also being collected via the same webform above. Since we are implementing this webform for the first time, we encourage you to test it out before the actual submission (both nomination and support letter submission). If you think you have made a mistake, just let us know.

If you have questions about the nomination process, please contact Judy Chan, LFS Learning Centre (Judy.Chan@ubc.ca).
