Due Feb. 21: Return to Campus – Quick Survey

The University is seeking input from faculty, staff and student leaders (LFS|US and GSS) about a return to in-person learning.

You may have seen this invitation from your supervisor yesterday – faculty and staff are encouraged to fill in a short survey to share their thoughts about the possible return to mostly in-person instruction on February 7, 2022. The University would like to know how to improve confidence for those who are feeling anxious about returning on Feb. 7.

All responses should be submitted by 9am on Friday, January 21, and they will remain anonymous. I will collect this information and share it with the senior administration at the University.

Survey: https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_a5UiBKsrtf8OdW6

I want to thank everyone for their hard work over the past two years, and for continuing to be flexible during the course of the pandemic.

Cheers,
Rickey Yada

Call for Nominations – International Day of Women & Girls in Science

In the days leading up to the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on Friday, February 11, LFS will be highlighting five students on our social media channels and website. We are looking for nominations from faculty and staff of students who have demonstrated community leadership, academic excellence, or who have overcome barriers to study at UBC.

If you’d like to nominate an undergraduate or graduate student who self-identifies as a woman, please send their contact information to lfs.today@ubc.ca by Tuesday, January 25 at 10am. We will select five people and reach out to profile them.

If you have any questions, please contact:

Teaching Theory Thursday – Web Conferencing Narration

Whether you are doing an annotation activity or trying to find and load your PowerPoint file in Zoom, always narrate what you are doing and what is going on. For example, “I am going to load my PowerPoint now.” This helps fill the silence to avoid students not knowing why you’ve gone silent or thinking their sound has cut out.

Brought to you by The Learning Centre.

Feb. 8 – UBC Reads Sustainability with Aja Barber

Featuring Aja Barbers new book, Consumed: The Need for Collective Change: Colonialism, Climate Change, and Consumerism

A call to action for consumers everywhere, Consumed asks us to look at how and why we buy what we buy, how it’s created, who it benefits, and how we can solve the problems created by a wasteful system. Barber calls for change within an industry that regularly overreaches with abandon, creating real imbalances in the environment and the lives of those who do the work – often in unsafe conditions for very low pay – and the billionaires who receive the most profit.
