Sexual Assault Awareness Month

January is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and UBC’s Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office has provided resources to be shared across the UBC community. If you are an administrator, faculty or teaching staff, or a staff member, there are key resources that provide information and guidance on sexual violence prevention and response.

Please review these resources: https://svpro.ubc.ca/faculty-and-staff/#resources

We will have someone from UBC’s SVPRO come to a future LFS Virtual Townhall to discuss how to respond when helping people in distress.

Feb. 4 – SOIL Seminar: Richard Kabzems

Speaker: Richard Kabzems, Research Silviculturist, BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, Dawson Creek B.C.
Presentation: Long term soil productivity and soil conservation in northeastern BC
Date: Friday Feb 4, 2022, 3:00-4:00 pm   Livestreamed via zoom (see details below for how to join)

Bio: I am a second generation boreal forester, currently nearing the end of his civil service rotation age.  Growing up in northern Saskatchewan, I went to university in Saskatoon with the idea of studying biology.  By 1979 I had an agriculture degree (plant ecology), and had spent two years in the NHL (No Hit League) where I was Ankle bender of the Year.  Consulting work and further education (MSc in Forest Ecology, UBC) alternated for a few years.

Since 1991 I have been a research Silviculturist with the Province of BC, working in the boreal forests of the northeast.  My work has included mixedwood succession and response to disturbance, soil productivity, alternative silviculture systems, broadleaf and mixedwood silviculture, and vegetation management.  My life and work in the northeast constantly brings home the awareness that we live in a complex, interconnected environment.

Feb. 7 – Vancouver Foundation Participatory Action Research (PAR) Grants

Applications are open for Participatory Action Research Grants (PAR) until February 7 at 11:59 PM (PT).

PAR grants fund projects that question and investigate the root causes of complex community health issues. Within this broad context, we’re also interested in receiving proposals that investigate the root causes of racism and other discriminatory behaviours and beliefs experienced by adults and children within health systems.
Available PAR Grants:

  1. Convene Grants – Short-term grants up to $20,000 to help teams unpack a complex heath issue and to question the systemic behaviours that have created or sustained it. They are intended to help teams develop a research question and project plan to be funded in the future.
  2. Investigate Grants – Multi-year grants up to $100,000 per year for up to three years to help teams answer a research question, analyze their findings, and share knowledge in a way that supports the community to take action in the future.

Download the Granting Guidelines and the 2022 Addendum for more information, including how we’ve updated the application form to make it easier to apply.
