LFS in the News

Andy Black, Patrick Pow, Maja Krzic, Sean Smuckler, Rachhpal Jassal, Ningyu Quan and Chantel Chizen were featured in an article in Country Life in BC about their study measuring GHG emissions from vegetable, blueberry and forage crops in the lower Fraser Valley. Their study is “providing information that will help researchers and farmers improve efficiencies and develop best management practices (BMP) to reduce emissions while maximizing yields”.

Designing Effective Surveys

While designing your surveys, keep the following points in mind to maximize your survey participation:

  1. Try to keep the surveys as focused and short as possible. If the required survey is long, incentivize participation in the survey (for e.g. with a gift card)
  2. Ask direct questions and eliminate ambiguity in your surveys. Use branching logic to skip through irrelevant questions and shorten the survey for some participants.
  3. Avoid sending out surveys too frequently to reduce survey fatigue. A general rule would be to send out at intervals of 2 interactions or more (if it is a weekly class, survey students with a gap of at least 2 weeks).

You can access UBC’s survey tool at https://ubc.qualtrics.com/. For more information, contact the LFS Learning Centre at it@landfood.ubc.ca.
