Changes in the LFS Finance Office

It is with mixed emotion that we announce that Vicky Zhang will be leaving LFS Finance.  Another opportunity has come up at ISC that she would like to pursue; therefore, we would like to thank her for her contribution and wish her the best of luck in her new position. Her last day will be Friday, August 6th.

LFS Mentorship Program: Inviting faculty & staff to become mentors!

Apply to be a mentor by Sept. 1 here.

We want to thank everyone for being given time at this week’s LFS Virtual Town Hall to present on the LFS Mentorship Program.

As highlighted, the LFS Mentorship Program provides students with a sense of community and connection through the opportunity to discuss career experiences with their mentorship group. These opportunities to connect are especially important as our new and returning students start their return to campus.

Your involvement enables students to have repeated time to spend with other peers, share their stories, and help them practice networking and other industry related skills, in a safe space to reflect and grow.

For more information on this year’s Program and your time commitment, please check out these links:

Thank you!

The LFS Mentorship Program team – Rob Kim, Thilini Leitan and Niki Glenning

P.S. Please email Niki Glenning (LFS Alumni Relations Manager) if you know an LFS Alumni who would make a great mentor.

Lunch & Learn Series – Today

Student reflections on the year of remote learning – by Adrian Granchelli

This session will be held on Friday, July 30, 2021 at noon.

The Learning Centre conducted focus groups in June, 2021 to ask students about their experience of remote learning what students want moving forward. In this Lunch & Learn we will discuss the three topics including social atmosphere, flexibility, and academic fairness. The focus groups proved to be an insightful look into the student experience and we are excited to share and discuss what we learned.

LFS in the News

Hans Schreier, professor emeritus of land and water systems, was featured in an article about southern B.C.’s extreme drought and its effect on salmon and crops. On increasingly unpredicatable weather patterns around the world, Hans states: “That’s going to be the norm, and the thing is it’s not going to be continuously increasing, it’s going to be continuous variability — and it’s those extremes which are really worrying.” CBC

Hans also gave comments about summer water use in Metro Vancouver and suggestions for water conservation measures. On these measures, Hans explained: “We have options, and most of the options are not expensive. But it means public education and the willingness politically to bite the bullet and do this properly.” Vancouver Sun, The Province
