New Face in Student Services!

Please join us as we welcome Shannon Blakeley to the Student Services team as our new Student Transition & Engagement Advisor. She will be responsible for managing the LFS ROOTSS transition program, and will provide academic advising services and support the development and implementation of additional programs that contribute to the academic success, personal development and retention of new undergraduate students in the Faculty.

Shannon joins us from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, where she was the Coordinator for their Transition Programs and Events Specialist with their Orientation and Transitions team. Shannon is also no stranger to UBC as she was also the Events Director for the UBC Graduate Student Society! Shannon holds a Bachelor of Tourism Management with Co-op Education from Thompson Rivers University and a Certificate of Marketing Communications with Distinction from BCIT. Her first day will be July 13, 2022 so please come by and introduce yourself (either virtually or in-person)!

Tech Tip Tuesday – Patch Update Notifications

LFS uses a product called EndPoint Central from the vendor Management Engine for keeping UBC owned computers up to date. You will see this patch notification alert from the taskbar on your computer when a patch update is being deployed.

You can choose to allow the patch to run right away, let it start automatically via timer, or select Skip to postpone. If you select the Skip option, you will be prompted again at a later time.

It is important to keep computers updated as it minimises the risks of malware infection or security breaches.

Please contact the Learning Centre if you have any questions or concerns at it@landfood.ubc.ca.

Report Marks the End of Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond’s Term

Dr. Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, Aki-Kwe, published a comprehensive report on the activities of the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre over the past four years. The report’s publication marks the end of Dr. Turpel-Lafond’s term as Academic Director with the Centre, a position she stepped into in 2018.

As she steps away from work with the Centre, Dr. Turpel-Lafond notes that we need to celebrate the work done to date, in cooperation with Survivors and Indigenous communities. “There is much work to be done going forward,” she says, “especially in the areas where the Centre’s expertise and programs can be in service to Indigenous peoples—such as through oral testimony collection, digitization of records and repatriation of materials to families and communities.”

During her time at the Centre, Dr. Turpel-Lafond contributed to the advancement of Indigenous peoples’ human rights and to UBC’s progress in meeting its reconciliation goals. “On behalf of the entire Centre staff, both present and past, it has been a true privilege and honour to work with Mary Ellen these past years,” says Elizabeth Shaffer, the Centre’s Executive Director. “She has provided the vision, direction, and advocacy needed for the Centre to uphold Survivors and ground our work in human rights and anti-racism. Her guidance and strength will be truly missed, and we wish her all the best.”
