Changes in the FNH Admin Office

We are announcing today that Barb Wakal will be retiring at the end of this month.  We would like to thank her for her work in the Food, Nutrition and Health Program, and wish her well as she embarks on a new stage in her life. Her last day in the office will be July 2, 2021.

Soil Science Students Dig Deep at Canadian Society of Soil Science

The Canadian Soil Science Society Annual Meeting in 2021 was held virtually from Jun 7-10, 2021.

Paula Porto, MSc student in Soil Science was the 1st place winner in the CF Bentley Award for her presentation “Effect of drainage system on greenhouse gas emission from highbush blueberry fields in B.C.”

Raelnai Kesler, MSc student in Soil Science received honorable mention for her presentation “Do overwinter plastic tarps provide better nutrition and water retention than cover crops?”

Fernanda Diaz-Osorio was awarded the CSSS Book Award for the top undergraduates in soil science in Canada.

Congratulations to all of our student presenters (and award winners) at the Canadian Society of Soil Science annual meeting 2021!

Last Notice: Course Expense & Teaching Equipment Fund Requests

Teaching an Undergraduate course in 2020/21 Winter Term 1?
It’s time – send in your:

Only the current form will be accepted. Please download forms from the LFS Internet Finance pages (use a web browser other than Chrome as the documents will not open in that browser; we are checking this currently).

Email your completed form(s) to virginia.frankian@ubc.ca by June 15th.

Forms and details for both types of expenses are available on the “LFS Intranet Finance” page, under Teaching-Related Funding.

Course Expense Fund:
For course expenses other than photocopying (e.g., laboratory supplies, field trip expenses, parking expenses for guests, etc.).
To be reimbursed, expenses must be on the current form, pre-approved and itemized or your claim will not be processed.

Note that students should not be charged course fees for any LFS courses.

Teaching Equipment Fund:
For equipment or other items needed for teaching purposes over multiple years.
Purchases to be used by several courses and/or programs will be given priority.
Eligible expense examples include laboratory equipment, field equipment and audio-visual equipment.

** Late requests may not receive funding **

Job Posting: FNH Administrative Clerk Position

The FNH Administrative Clerk position is a wide-ranging role that leverages an eye for detail and exemplary people and problem-solving skills to support the Food, Nutrition and Health Program in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems. Core tasks involve providing administrative, front counter, and financial support to FNH faculty, staff and students. This position acts as the first point of contact for the FNH administrative office.

CTLT: 2022/23 Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund

Large TLEF Transformation Projects
TLEF Transformation projects are large, multi-year projects that are intended to advance UBC’s strategic goals relating to transformative learning.

Large TLEF Transformation projects can request up to $250,000 over the life of the project, and can run up to three years.

  • Letters of Intent need to be submitted by 3:00 pm on July 15, 2021.
  • Applicants who are invited to submit a proposal need to submit their proposal by 3:00 pm on October 14, 2021.
  • Renewal applications for existing projects (for Year 2 or 3 funding) also need to be submitted by 3:00 pm on October 14, 2021.
  •  If you would like to receive feedback from the LFS Internal Review Committee, please submit your draft Letter of Intent to Judy Chan (judy.chan@ubc.ca) by Wednesday, June 30, at 3:00 pm.

Small TLEF Transformation Projects
Small TLEF Innovation projects are grassroots projects that are intended to support experimentation with pedagogical approaches that have strong potential to enhance learning.

Small TLEF Innovation projects can request up to $50,000 over the life of the project, and can run from one to three years.

  • Proposals need to be submitted by 3:00 pm on November 18, 2021.
  • Renewal applications for existing projects (for Year 2 or 3 funding) need to be submitted by 3:00 pm on November 12, 2020.
  • If you would like feedback from the LFS Internal Review Committee, please submit your proposals in Word format by Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 3:00 pm (more details on how to submit this will be available once the official call is available).

ACAM390A Virtual Community Showcase Invitation

You are cordially invited to the ACAM390A Virtual Community Showcase on Thursday, June 24th, from 4:00pm PDT – 6:00pm PDT for Professor Henry Yu’s UBC summer travel class: ACAM390A: Food and the Heritage of Chinese Migrations.

The students will present their project implementation plans for public programming, education, and marketing and promotion they have designed in the past month.
