UBC Students Win Map the System Global Finals

LFS students Cathy Zhu and Emily Chau along with Kinesiology student Anika Cheng won first place in the Map the System Global Finals! Hosted by the University of Oxford, the competition encourages a systems approach to understanding complex social and environmental problems.

This is UBC’s first Map the System win and Anika, Cathy and Emily were supported by UBC’s Centre for Community Engaged Learning in preparing for the competition.

For their project, Anika, Cathy and Emily evaluated food insecurity for Indigenous Peoples living in B.C.’s urban settings. There are 198 distinct First Nations groups in B.C. and the students looked system-wide at the issues and ways of moving forward. The students worked with community partner Unique Get Together Society (UGTS), an Indigenous-led non-profit in understanding the issues more deeply.
