Random Acts of Recognition

Under the leadership of the LFS Development and Alumni Engagement team, LFS staff members supported two successful events last week. The Faculty co-hosted an art auction fundraiser on behalf of Arran Stephens, a member of the LFS Faculty Advisory Board, co-founder of Nature’s Path, philanthropist, and painter. One of his paintings was auctioned to support the efforts of Doctors Without Borders in the Ukraine. The UBC Hatch Gallery continues to exhibit his artwork until June 12.

In addition, the DAE team organized an alumni reception, held post-graduation, to congratulate our newest alumni and recognize recent alumni award recipients.

June 16 – Getting serious about climate change: How business must step up

Climate change is one of the most important and pressing challenges facing our planet and humanity today. What is the role of business and the private sector in fighting climate change, and how can (and why must) business step up to address this challenge now?

June 24 – Forum on the Effective Mentorship of Racialized Graduate Students

On June 24, 2022, there will be a forum at St. John’s College that will address mentorship reflections from students and participating mentors, the value and current state of racial diversity in graduate school, as well as key challenges such as communication barriers, unconscious biases, and power differentials. The forum will include two keynote speakers, Handel Wright, Senior Advisor on Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence and Professor in Education Studies, and Sam Kenston, UBC Graduate Student Society President and PhD student in the School of Population and Public Health, a panel discussion with graduate students (Dwayne Tucker, Tebby Leepile, and Katherine Cao) and faculty members (Bhushan Gopaluni and Bathseba Opini), and an opportunity for smaller group discussions and sharing.

More details on the project including a link to the op-ed written by graduate student Dwayne Tucker that was the inspiration for this work.

Open to all interested faculty, students, and staff, this event will allow racialized graduate students at UBC to have their voices heard, and their experiences acknowledged and shared with UBC administration, faculty and beyond in an attempt to enhance racialized graduate experiences at UBC.

June 27 – UBC ARC Workshop: Introduction to Database

UBC Advanced Research Computing (ARC) is hosting a 2.5 hours lecture-format workshop on Introduction to Databases.  We invite anyone to attend who is interested in learning more about how to use databases and in-database analytics in their research.

In this workshop, we will provide an overview of databases and then use a case study to demonstrate how to build a relational database from scratch, interact with the database, and perform in-database analytics.

Attendees should have some basic understanding of Linux command line. Lightweight python scripts will be used for in-database analytics, but coding will not be covered in the workshop. Python programming skills are not a requirement for this course. Experience with database integrated development environment (IDE) and code editor is helpful but not a must.

Aug. 1 – Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge

Hosted by the Institute of Food Technologists and funded by the Seeding The Future Foundation, the Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge will return after a successful inaugural year with the goal of inspiring and supporting innovative, diverse, and multidisciplinary teams to create game-changing innovations that will help transform the food system. To incentivize innovation at all levels, ranging from idea generation to development and scale-up, the Challenge offers three levels of awards consisting of Seed Grants, Growth Grants, and a Grand Prize category, totaling up to $1 million annually.
