This interactive workshop will feature contributions from instructors of a first-year undergraduate scholarly writing course in Land & Food Systems and Forestry. Participants will hear from panelists about their experiences of building a writing community online in order to mitigate social isolation and help meet student learning goals. The session will explore the practice of weekly free-writing over Zoom, the use of discussion boards for weekly writing assignments, the inclusion of non-scholarly activities such as synchronous cooking, and the creation of transformative writing communities through pedagogy that centers process and storytelling. Participants will be guided in a writing activity and invited to reflect on how they can incorporate some of these strategies into their own teaching practice.

Facilitators:

  • Lindsay Cuff, Assistant Professor of Teaching (LFS/Forestry)
  • Duffy Roberts, Sessional Lecturer (Continuing)
  • Dr. Candice Rideout, Associate Professor of Teaching (LFS)
  • Sarah-Nelle Jackson, Sessional Lecturer, PhD Candidate in the Department of English

Go by Bike Week & Bicycle Safety

May 31 – June 6 was Go by Bike Week. During the week-long event, HUB Cycling encourages people to get out and ride their bikes anywhere and everywhere. You could log your trips online for a chance to win great prizes, track your kilometres, and see how many greenhouse gas emissions you’ve saved. Safety & Risk Services has created a new section on their website regarding bicycle safety on campus including a simple 7 point inspection checklist that should be completed prior to every ride.

World Environment Day (June 5)

June 5 was World Environment Day. To do your part, make sure you understand how to properly sort waste. Test your knowledge in the “Sort it out – waste sorting game” for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate from the bookstore.

Advancing Climate Change Science and Technology Request for Proposals

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Climate Action and Awareness Fund (CAAF) has opened a request for proposals (RFP) for Advancing Climate Change Science and Technology Research. More information about CAAF can be found at the link above.

This RFP will fund projects that will strengthen Canada’s science capacity to understand, identify, accelerate, and evaluate actions towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The total envelope of the RFP is to $59M.

To be eligible for funding under this request for proposals, lead applicants must be one of the following:

  • not-for-profit non-government organizations (NGO, e.g., environmental community groups),
  • Indigenous organizations, or
  • universities and academic institutions.

Lead applicants are encouraged to develop collaborative proposals and partner with other academic institutions and organizations, including federal, provincial, territorial, or municipal government partners. While supporting applicants or partners are not required as part of the proposal, their participation will be treated as an asset, or additional strength, as it reflects the opportunity and potential for knowledge transfer.
There is a two-step application process, consisting of a Letter of Intent (LOI) phase open to all eligible applicants, followed by an invitation-only full proposal phase. The applications will be accepted only through the Grants and Contributions Enterprise Management System. The deadline to submit a LOI is June 10, 2021.

Net Zero Challenge Ideation Workshop

Meeting the Net Zero Decarbonization Challenge: Virtual

In response to our federal Clean Canada plan to be net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and BC’s legislated 80% reduction target, considerable efforts must be made by governments, academia, and private sector to create, find and implement innovative solutions to reduce atmospheric carbon. The Cascadia region, with its wealth of clean energy assets, nature-based carbon capture opportunities and culture of environmental stewardship is well-poised to be a North American leader in this effort.

The University of VictoriaCanada’s Digital Technology Supercluster and the Cascadia Innovation Corridor have teamed up to welcome you to join this virtual event to engage in an expert panel and ideation workshop to discuss these challenges and the related opportunities.
