The data revolution in biodiversity research
Matthew Mitchell is using high performance computing to answer questions about biodiversity conservation, landscape ecology and the impacts of climate change. An LFS Research Associate, Mitchell is using UBC’s Advanced Research Computing (ARC) to capture, store and analyze sounds at UBC Farm located at the Vancouver campus. Automated technology and microphones capture the overall soundscape with two microphones that run 24/7, collecting sounds from birds, insects, frogs, people, cars, and construction. One additional microphone picks up ultrasonic sounds to monitor bats, specifically. Laura Super, a Forestry PhD candidate, is working with Mitchell and, in addition, she uses ARC to analyze microbial data from plants for her PhD under supervisor Robert Guy, with a focus on phytobiomes and soil microbiomes.
The vast amounts of data collected allow for biodiversity monitoring and will enable them to understand the impact of climate change on different species and phytobiomes.
