Syllabus Service & Course Reserves – Summer 2022

UBC Library is pleased to offer the Syllabus Service that allows you to submit your Reading List directly to the library so that your students can access all course materials through our Library Online Course Reserves system (LOCR), which is integrated with Canvas.

Faculty and instructors who prefer self-service may continue to manually input course reserves requests into LOCR. However, the Syllabus Service provides a complementary full-service option that relieves users of the need to enter bibliographic data into the system. Both options ensure that the course materials are made available to students while respecting Canadian copyright law and existing UBC licensing agreements and policies.

How to submit a Reading List?
1) Upload your Reading List via Canvas or LOCR by using “Add Syllabus” button.

2) Or, email a copy to syllabus.service@ubc.ca (MS Word or PDF document).

We expect a basic reading list to include the following information:
· The course name and course code
· Your name and contact information
· Full citations for works, including page numbers where applicable
· Request for new purchases for the Library collections (only if applicable)

* If you have PDFs of the course materials please share them with us via syllabus.service@ubc.ca or OneDrive; this may expedite the process.

**If you plan to merge multiple course sections in Canvas, please ensure this is done before sending the reading list to us or using the self-service. Contact your faculty’s Instructional Support or LT Hub to request a merge.

Processing Timelines
While most digital course materials can be cleared in a matter of days, acquiring permissions from some publishers can be a lengthy process and, in some cases, may take several weeks.

To ensure that the course material is available to students on time, please submit your Reading List at least a month in advance. However, instructors may continue to submit requests at any time. Materials will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Course Material is Ready
Your assigned digital course material will be available as a single list (articles, eBooks, chapter/excerpts, and media resources) in one place and accessible through both Canvas (ensure the Library Online Course Reserves module is enabled) and the standalone LOCR site.

LOCR will also generate a direct link to your course material in “Instructor Mode.” You may share this link with your students any way you like (email, blog, LMS), as it will work only for enrolled students for that particular course.

Requested print items will be available in the physical course reserves collection.

If you have any questions, or need more information about the service, please contact syllabus.service@ubc.ca directly, or get in touch with your library branch.
