Restriction on Proctoring Software, including Proctorio

“The UBC Vancouver Senate voted in favor of a motion to direct UBCV Faculties to stop using remote invigilation tools that involve automated recording and algorithmic analysis of data captured during invigilation, except in cases where the use of such ‘remote proctoring software’ is required by external accreditation bodies. This motion, which is effective immediately, comes after much discussion and consultation with stakeholders across campus, including students and faculty.”

LFS Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

LFS TA Award Adjudication Committee received a total of six nominations. These six outstanding teaching assistants supported a couple dozens of courses in the Programs of Applied Biology, Food, Nutrition, and Health, in the Core Series, and courses outside of LFS, and enhanced learning for hundreds of students in LFS and across campus. They also demonstrated their educational leadership in serving on a wide range of events in the Faculty, bringing us all together as a vibrant research and learning community, both before and during the pandemic.

With average adjudication scores fell within 5% of each of the nominees, the Adjudication Committee selected one single recipient:

Amelie Huiying Zhang, Master of Science student in Food Science, was recognized for her efforts in creating connections with students and her diverse contributions to many teaching and learning initiatives in LFS.

LFS in the News

Assistant Professor of Teaching Kristen Walker was on CKNW’s Weekend Morning Radio Show last Sunday to discuss the Human-Black Bear Conflict study, which she is conducting with undergraduate students in the Applied Biology program. Listen here: The Bears Are Back!

Call for Faculty Fellows for Jump Start

In December 2019, UBC declared a climate emergency. As a result, the university is developing an ambitious Climate Action Plan (CAP2030) aimed at implementing strategies that will result in emissions reductions from UBC’s core operations by 2030 through clean energy solutions and energy-efficient technologies. We are also identifying new ways to reduce emissions through our day-to-day activities, including commuting, food, waste and air travel.

Now we’re turning to you, members of the UBC community, to share your valuable insights around what we can all do to help meet our goals. Come to one of our virtual events to learn more about CAP2030 and fill out a survey to share your perspective!

All survey participants will be entered into a draw to win a $100 gift card.

Agricultural Climate Solutions

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has launched Agricultural Climate Solutions (ACS), a new 10-year $185 million program, that will help mitigate climate change.

ACS will establish a strong, Canada-wide network of regional collaborations based on the living lab approach bringing together farmers, scientists and other sectoral stakeholders. Together, they will develop and share management practices that best store carbon and mitigate climate change. This work will also produce important environmental co-benefits, including protecting biodiversity, increasing water and soil quality, while improving farmers’ bottom lines.

Each hub will centre around real farms where farmers and researchers can co-develop the best practices, including cover crops, intercropping, conversion of marginal land to permanent cover, shelterbelts, nutrient management, and inclusion of pulses in rotations.

The ACS program is one of many important new initiatives being undertaken to promote environmental sustainability and resiliency in the agriculture sector, and is part of Canada’s Strengthened Climate Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, and towards net-zero emissions by 2050.

AAFC is hosting the following virtual ACS information sessions. Join us to learn more information about how your organization can participate. Please use the following links to register for a session:
