Marina von Keyserlingk receives UBC Killam Research Prize

Congratulations to Marina von Keyserlingk for winning a UBC Killam Research Prize in the science category, in recognition of her outstanding research and scholarly contributions in the field of animal welfare. This award is given by UBC’s Office of the VP, Research and Innovation and is adjudicated by the Faculty Research Awards Committee.

Lennie Cheung receives Killam Graduate TA Award

Congratulations to Lennie Cheung (PhD candidate) for being selected as the Killam Graduate TA Award recipient in LFS for 2022. The committee received a total of four nominations from different programs in LFS, who in turn taught courses in the Programs of Applied Biology, Food, Nutrition, and Health, Food and Resources Economics, and in the Core Series, enhancing learning for hundreds of students in LFS.

Thank you to Dan Weary, Kirsten Walker, Derek Dee, and Celina Chan (LFSUS Senior Advisor) for serving on the adjudication committee.

Congratulations to Random Acts of Recognition recipients:

Deborah Wang for being patient and helpful in processing invoices and answering finance questions, despite it being a very busy time as the end of fiscal nears. She is always willing to assist and makes the finance process so seamless.

Apr. 1 – IOF Seminar: Marine fishes do not need visas

Marine fishes do not need visas: managing shared fish stocks in a changing world

In this presentation Dr. Palacios Abrantes will take you through five years of research on this topic covering global, regional and local studies. The results presented here have direct implications for managing fisheries targeting transboundary species, highlighting the need for strengthened effective and equitable international cooperation. This is specially true for many countries that will see early shifts in the distribution of an important number of transboundary stocks and where fisheries are of uttermost importance for maintaining livelihoods and food security.

3. UK-Canada Globalink doctoral exchange scheme — UKRI (UK- travel to Canada)

  • Deadline: April 26, 2022
  • Intern Level: PhD students
  • Other requirements: This scheme is open to doctoral students working in all areas of UKRI’s research remit who are funded by one of UKRI’s research councils: AHRC, BBSRC, ESRC, EPSRC, MRC, NERC, STFC. It also includes the UKRI Artificial Intelligence Centers for Doctoral Training. funded by UKRI research council
  • Themes: All disciplines
  • Eligible institutions: All universities in the UK
  • Co-funding: No financial contribution is required from the Canadian university

Mar. 31 – Job Posting: Director, Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES)

Dr. Milind Kandlikar will finish his term as Director of the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) on June 30, 2022. A search committee has been formed to conduct a search for the next Director of IRES. The position is open to all qualified candidates holding a tenured professorial rank at UBC, with strong preference being given to those at the rank of Professor. The advertisement and the position profile are attached. Throughout the process, the search committee will be seeking input from all IRES constituents.

Applications should include a cover letter, current curriculum vitae and the names and contact information for two referees. The application deadline is Thursday, March 31, 2022.
