LFS Learning Centre Lunch & Learn Series: Schedule for May

The LFS Learning Centre hosts the Lunch & Learn series where ideas related to best practices in technology, teaching & learning, course design and student support are presented and discussed. We have been hosting these sessions virtually on Zoom every Friday since April 2020. Current attendees include staff and faculty members from the Faculty of Land and Food Systems as well as from the Faculty of Science and Forestry that allows for inter-faculty exchange of knowledge and ideas.

We thank our attendees for joining us every week on our Lunch & Learn series. The experience and anecdotes brought by the attendees to these sessions are invaluable and help us in facilitating the flow of ideas within our faculty.

We are announcing the schedule for May and early June for the Lunch & Learns on our website at https://lc.landfood.ubc.ca/workshops/lunch-and-learn/. We will have the following sessions in the upcoming weeks:

  1. May 14th, 2021: Dan Weary will present on Peer Review of Teaching
  2. May 21st, 2021: Sean Hollowaychuk will present his experiences in teaching the distance learning course LFS 302
  3. May 28th, 2021: Lindsay Cuff will present on creativity in STEM online
  4. June 4th, 2021: No session in lieu of the Joint Forestry and LFS Teaching Colloquy. (More information here)
  5. June 11th, 2021: Sandra Brown and Maja Krzic will present on their perspectives and lessons learned in teaching a large online introductory soil science course during the COVID-19 pandemic

LFS Students Win National Map the System Competition!

Undergraduate students Anika Cheng, Cathy Zhu and Emily Chau are off to the finals!  These undergraduate students won the Map the System National Finals on May 7. Working with Unique Get Together Society (UGTS), they evaluated food security for Indigenous Peoples living in BC’s urban settings. Map the System encourages a systems approach to understanding complex social and environmental problems. Next up, they’re competing in the Global Finals (virtually) hosted by the University of Oxford on June 9-11. We are proud they have come so far, and wish them good luck!

UBC Sustainability Interdisciplinary Education Grants – extended deadline!

Application deadline extended to Monday, May 24, 2021 at 5pm PST.

The Interdisciplinary Education Grant program provides funding for small teams of UBC Vancouver faculty members to design interdisciplinary sustainability curriculum. Join your peers to innovate and enrich sustainability learning across UBC.

Applications are now open for funding up to $10,000 per year, for up to two years. Apply by May 24 to begin work on your sustainability curriculum project in September 2021.

PICS Calling for Opportunity Projects proposals

Apply to get your high-impact climate solutions proposal funded by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) Opportunity Projects Program.

Applications are now being received for the PICS Opportunity Projects Program, which supports new and emerging leaders to pursue bold and impactful climate solutions research.

Successful projects are awarded up to $180,000 over a maximum three-year duration, and three to five awards are made per call.

Applications close on August 04, 2021. Notification of adjudication decisions will be made in December 2021, with projects to start in 2022.

Our doors are open to your ideas and innovation, and we encourage teams to contact PICS staff to discuss their proposal before applying.

Diversity Equity and Inclusion 101: Best Practices – May 21

Diversity and inclusion are common buzzwords these days but few understand what they really mean or entail. In this webinar, we will explore what diversity and inclusion REALLY are as well as common myths and misconceptions.

We will discuss everything from implicit and explicit bias, diversity in areas you haven’t thought of, intent vs. impact, and calling in vs. calling out and more.

Participants will explore their personal relationship with systems of privilege and oppression and leave with actionable ways to increase their inclusive practices, both as individuals and members of organizations. We will explore the history of diversity and inclusion, how structural inequality has led to the marginalization of communities in the United States, and the future of D & I trends.

Dr. Laura McGuire is the founder of the National Center for Equity and Agency. She has worked as an instructor, presenter, educator, consultant, and trainer. Her experience includes both public and private sectors, middle schools, high schools, and university settings. In 2015, she served as the first Sexual Violence Prevention and Education Program Manager at the University of Houston, and in 2017, she became the first Victim Advocate/Prevention Educator at the US Merchant Marine Academy. Dr. McGuire lives the United States, where she works as a full-time consultant and expert witness.
