Classroom Teaching Load Calculator

In preparation for the upcoming Faculty Council Meeting this Thursday, May 19, we are posting the revised Classroom Teaching Load Calculator on the LFS Intranet. https://my.landfood.ubc.ca/classroom-teaching-workload-calculator/

Please “test” the points calculator for your own classes. If you have questions, please see the how-to documentation and/or FAQs. We can also address questions during that faculty council on May 19 – the meeting will be recorded for those who cannot attend. The vote for approval will take place via survey after the meeting.

Best,
Sandra, Carol and Chris (on behalf of Sue and the rest of the CTWC committee)

Tech Tip Tuesday: Password Managers

Do you have trouble coming up with secure passwords, remembering them, and reusing the same password on multiple websites and services? Introducing password safes –  these applications will auto generate passwords for each website and store them securely for you. You will only need to create and remember 1 master password that locks your password safe.

Online password safes use no knowledge encryption when it uploads your passwords to their site. The application vendor has no way of reading your data and it is safe. To learn more about this and know which safes are recommended, visit this UBC CIO web page, https://cio.ubc.ca/information-security/policy-standards-and-resources/password-safes

Contact the Learning Centre at it@landfood.ubc.ca if you have any questions or need advice.

May 20 – Lunch and Learn Series: JEDI Session on “Ways White Bias Can Misdirect Food System Work” with Will Valley

Our next session will be held on Friday, May 20th, 2022 at noon (PT). Will Valley (Associate Dean, EDI at Faculty of Land and Food Systems) will lead the session this week.
Starting this month, the Lunch & Learn Series will host a Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI)-based discussion session on the third Friday of each month. These sessions will be led by Will Valley and will be open to all. For these sessions, attendees will be provided with an article or podcast episode that will be explored in a reflective and interactive discussion.

This week, the session will be on “Ways White Bias Can Misdirect Food Systems Work.” Join us for a discussion on how white bias influences our approaches to framing, addressing, and evaluating strategies for improving outcomes in the food system, and how we can try to interrupt the reproduction of white bias in our teaching and classrooms. This session will build upon the insights from the Duke Sanford World Food Policy Center podcast episode, “Ways White Bias Can Misdirect Food System Work.”

May 24 – Graduate Instructional Skills Workshops

This 4-day workshop (24-hour) consists of teaching practice, theory application, and topical sessions specifically relevant to Teaching Assistants and Graduate Students at UBC. During the workshop you will teach 3 short lessons and receive feedback from your peers. You will work closely with peers and trained facilitators (who are themselves UBC graduate students). In this supportive atmosphere you will have a chance to begin to develop new teaching skills, to enhance existing skills, and/or to try new and challenging ideas. This workshop is being offered in a special ONLINE format to accommodate distance learning and to meet the rapidly changing needs of TAs and graduate student instructors as a result of this shift to online education and will therefore focus on online instruction.
