Events

Nov. 18 – Decolonial Lunch + Learn Session

RISE Workshop – Indigenous Research Methods, Protocols, and Processes

10am-12pm at the UBC Farm Yurt (The yurt can be very chilly in the month of November! Please wear warm clothes (winter jacket, warm sweater, toque, gloves) and bring your own mug for coffee and tea).

In order to move beyond the assumed universality and superiority of Western science within the university structure, and to create supportive systems that foster collaborative and wholisitic Indigenous science, Drs. Andrea Reid, Danielle Ignace, Shandin Pete, and Tabitha Robin Martens, have found it critical to build bridges between Indigenous science scholars across historically and contemporarily siloed departments and faculties within our institution. Through the formation of the “Resurgent Indigenous Scholars for the Environment” (RISE) Collective within the first year of our respective faculty appointments at UBC, we have created our own space for providing mutual support, co-designing research and teaching projects, and being in collective service to Indigenous Peoples within and beyond the university campus. Through a series of dialogue sessions rotating across each of our departments, we have been in ongoing conversation about the tensions that arise as we build purposeful Indigenous science space within a Western science-dominated frame.

For the second talk in our series, we will be be discussing Indigenous research methods, protocols, and processes, and how they are used in our own research projects.

Nov. 18 – Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries Seminar: Portrait of the marine biodiversity in the Canadian Arctic

During this presentation, Dr. Archambault will discuss misconceptions that circulate about marine biodiversity in the Canadian Arctic. For example, the Arctic is seen as an area with low marine biodiversity, but is that the case in Canada? Furthermore, climate change affects sea ice cover, and Arctic marine life depends on this environmental condition, but will the seafloor organisms also be affected?

Join on Nov. 18 at 11:00am. Sign-up here: https://oceans.ubc.ca/rsvp-iof-seminars-1/

Nov. 18 – Soil Science Seminar: Evaluation of N-urea fertilization to accelerate western red cedar growth and enhance soil carbon stocks on Haida Gwaii

Western red cedar is a major component of natural forests on Haida Gwaii, BC, but its regeneration is difficult due to intensive grazing by the island’s hyper-abundant deer population.

This seminar is presented by Christophe Boyer, a Master’s student in the UBC department of Forest and Conservation Sciences under the supervision of Dr. Sue Grayston.

Join on Nov. 18 at 3:00pm at MCML 154 or through Zoom at: https://ubc.zoom.us/meeting/register/u5Ukd-6pqzkiH9C6n4jDB67hk1fZhy2OL6kL

Nov. 18 – FNH Graduate Seminar: Assessing the Suitability and Acceptability of Two Nutrition Education Resources Among Registered Dietitians

Research suggests that there is a strong association between health literacy and health. This is of concern as 60% of adults in Canada have low health literacy. Health literacy requires writing and reading skills, as well as knowledge of a health topic. Unfortunately, there is often a mismatch between the literacy level of a nutrition education tool and the intended audience for which the tool has been created.
