LFS in the News

Dr. Will Valley and LFS alumni Marc Shutzbank (M.Sc. Integrated Studies in Land and Food Systems ’13; Executive Director of Fresh Roots Urban Farm) are highlighted in a recent article about contemporary food studies programs in North America in Life and Thyme – Sowing the Future of Food Systems. Contemporary food studies programs are increasingly addressing the multifaceted challenges of food and its politics, including social justice, food sovereignty, and environmental sustainability.

Kevin Cussen, product manager for LiteFarm, the farm management software developed by the UBC Farm team, was quoted in an article for the National Observer: How a new organic farming app is trying to weed out paperwork.

Random Acts of Recognition

Congratulations to Random Acts of Recognition recipients:

LFS Student Ambassadors Bryna Turk, Melanie Liu and Lucy Hoang for their efforts in programming the Taste of LFS Virtual Open House for prospective students Nov 16 – 21. This week-long series of student-led workshops, information sessions and more is meant to increase awareness of the Faculty and inspire students to apply.  They created the custom workshops, updated the website, prepared the social media assets, promoted the event to our recruitment colleagues and counsellor community, and will help host various sessions throughout the week.  You have done an amazing job preparing this week. Good luck!

To nominate a faculty member, staff or graduate student that’s been doing an outstanding job or has gone above and beyond in some way, send an email to lfs.recognition@ubc.ca and tell us why this person should be recognized. We’ll send them a $6 Starbucks gift card and acknowledge their good work in LFS Today.

For our final webinar of 2020, we are delighted to feature Dr. David Meek, Assistant Professor at the University of Oregon, and author of the newly released book, The Political Ecology of Education (2020; West Virginia University Press, Radical Natures series). Based on immersive fieldwork over the course of seven years, Meek makes the provocative argument that critical forms of food systems education are integral to agrarian social movements’ survival. While the need for critical approaches is especially immediate in the Amazon, Meek’s presentation speaks to the burgeoning attention to food systems education at various educational levels worldwide, from primary to postgraduate programs. His book calls us to rethink the politics of the possible within these pedagogies.
