Tech Tip Tuesday – Cisco myVPN

With the ongoing restrictions on fuel purchases by the provincial government, some faculty and staff members might be working remotely in the upcoming week. We recommend that you use UBC’s Cisco myVPN client when connecting to the UBC network from off-campus and when using non-secure wireless networks. myVPN encrypts your data and provides secure access to UBC online resources. Encryption prevents others from intercepting your private information such as usernames and passwords. UBC IT has instructions on how you can install and setup the VPN client on your device.

Setup Documents: https://it.ubc.ca/services/email-voice-internet/myvpn/setup-documents#setup

For more information or assistance on setting up the myVPN client, contact the LFS Learning Centre at it@landfood.ubc.ca.

Nov. 25 – Climate Emergency Town Hall

On Thursday, November 25th, there will be an important snap town hall on the climate emergency in BC. It will be a space to listen and process our current moment of climate breakdown (floods, heat domes, wildfires) and the brutal militarized response to land defenders taking place in Wet’suwet’en territory right now.

Event: Climate Emergency Now
From Declaration to Transformation: An Emergency Town Hall

Where: AMS Nest Atrium
When: Thursday, Nov 25th, 4-6pm
Who: Moderated by Avi Lewis, featuring speakers:

  • Kai Nagata, Dogwood
  • Kanahus Manuel, Tiny House Warriors
  • Naomi Klein, UBC professor of Climate Justice
  • Chief Ninawá Huni Kui, Federation of the Huni Kui President
  • Student activists from Climate Justice UBC

Why? After 26 UN climate summits and negligible emission reductions, young people around the world have declared themselves tired of the “blah blah blah.” British Columbia is is on the frontlines of both climate breakdown and new fossil fuel extraction. What is the role of the academy in moving our society from words and plans to the justice-based policies and actions that will keep our communities safe in the immediate term? What strategies will shift us into true emergency footing?

Nov. 25 – IRES Seminar: Naoko Ellis

Abstract:
Trained as technical experts, engineers are bred to solve problems. It was not until I taught the Environmental Engineering and Sustainability Leadership course that I realized how much of a gap there was between engineering solutions and the societal/political adaptation necessary for a sustainable future. We understand that for technological advancements to become solutions impacting society positively, various non-technical aspects must be in place. How do we then train engineers to become solution providers who understand the complexity of society? How are boundaries of engineering manifested? These questions have led me to join IRES last year, and continue working towards climate emergency through transdisciplinary research. This talk is a reflection on the journey to date, and an invitation to engage with the new collaborative PhD program.

Nov. 30 – NSERC Alliance Missions Grants

Alliance Missions grants will provide $100,000 to $500,000 per year for two years, to initiate research collaborations between Canada’s academic researchers and partners from private, public and/or not-for-profit partner organization(s). These grants will cover 100% of the eligible costs of research for a two-year period. The proposed projects should catalyze the development of partnerships between university researchers and partner organizations; after the two-year period of the Alliance Mission grants, promising partnerships can then apply for Alliance grants for longer project durations. The project proposals should be focused on addressing challenges that have emerged as a result of the pandemic and/or respond to new economic opportunities. Projects can be based on challenges identified by partner organizations that require research or research expertise.

Applications will be accepted any time until November 30, 2021.
