Welcome Andrea Frommel!

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Andrea Frommel has accepted the position of Chair of Sustainable Aquaculture at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) in the Applied Biology Program, starting July 1, 2021.  Andrea received a PhD in Fisheries Biology from the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research, IFM-GEOMAR in Kiel, Germany in 2012.  She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Institute of Ocean and Fisheries and the Department of Zoology at UBC, and a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in our Aquaculture Certificate Program.  Her research program focuses on the effects of environmental parameters on the development of early life stages of fish.  Congratulations Andrea!

As a part of its 24-Hours of Student Power day of student programming, UBC’s campus radio station—CiTR Radio—will be broadcasting two hours of audio stories from LFS 400, the faculty’s podcasting course. Tune into 101.9fm or player.citr.ca from today 11am to 1pm to hear stories on topics ranging from the Indigenous food scene in Vancouver, the pros and cons of a ketogenic diet, the challenges of pandemic grocery shopping, and much more.

Speakers will discuss topics related to valuing and strengthening Indigenous food systems, improving food and nutritional security, and seed sovereignty. Our colleagues in Forestry are presenting their experiences in online teaching.

Workshop Title: Forestry Workshop:  Faculty Experience Sharing in Online Teaching

Description:  In these panel sessions, we will hear from our Forestry colleagues who transitioned to online teaching and learning in Term 1. They will share their first-hand experiences and reflect on what worked well and what didn’t, both for them and for their students. A broad range of online teaching and learning topics will be covered in a Q&A format, including student engagement, course redesign, applications of online learning tools, assessment strategies, time commitments, areas for improvement, etc.
