LFS Holiday Party – Register by Dec. 2

The Faculty will be hosting a late-lunch buffet on Friday, Dec. 9 for LFS faculty and staff. This is a way to thank everyone for their outstanding contributions, both over the past year and throughout the pandemic. We are looking forward to closing out 2022 together, and celebrating our LFS Service Award winners.

New Face in Student Services!

Please join us as we welcome Jordan Scansen as our new Indigenous Academic Advisor. He will be responsible for developing, providing and evaluating academic advising services, programs and projects, in order to strengthen the recruitment, admission, academic success, personal development and retention of all undergraduate students in the Faculty, with a focus on Indigenous students. Jordan joins us from the Elizabeth Fry Society of Greater Vancouver where he was the Volunteer Coordinator of the Court Runner program for the Downtown Community Court. Jordan started as a volunteer Court Runner before supervising the program. Prior to these roles, Jordan was in healthcare security at VGH. Jordan holds a BA in Criminology from SFU. His first day with the Student Services team will be December 5, 2022 so please come by and introduce yourself (either virtually or in-person)!

A number of teaching and learning funding opportunities are available for you to redesign your courses, adapt or recreate open education resources, or place more attention on Indigenous knowledge in your curriculum, but they all have deadlines in early January 2023! Jan. 9 (internal deadline) – Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Fellows Program

Would you like to redesign your courses to remove learning barriers? You may develop more accessible content such as video with transcripts and downloadable PDFs. You may also redesign class activities to promote collaboration from learners with diverse needs and background. Or, you may work on creating more flexible assessment strategies. There are many approaches you may engage to create equitable learning for all students in your courses.

You may apply to be a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Fellow in LFS. You will receive a course release and work with a cohort of other UDL Fellows from across campus to re-design and implement accessible courses. Aside from your dedication in removing barriers for LFS learners, LFS UDL Fellow will be selected by the LFS Academic Administration Committee about this UDL Fellows Program, you may check out this link or contact Judy Chan at judy.chan@ubc.ca

Jan. 27 – Call for Research Proposals | Work Learn International Undergraduate Research Awards

Are you looking for funding to hire international undergraduate students to work full-time on your research for Summer 2023? The Work Learn International Undergraduate Research Awards provides an award subsidy to hire international undergraduate students to work on your research projects while allowing students to explore workplace and research skills. These awards are valued at $6,000 and are distributed across seven Faculties/Schools at UBC Vancouver Campus.

Based on BC’s current minimum wage requirements (min. wage of $15.65/hour), the minimum pay for the tenure of the award of 16 weeks is $9,000.63, inclusive of 4% vacation pay; hence the minimum top-up from the supervisor is $3,000.63.

The Faculty of Land & Food Systems has Ten (10) WLIURAs available for 2023.

Summer 2023 Program Timeline:

  • Call for Research Project Proposals period: November 28, 2022 – January 27, 2023.
    • Note: Faculty members will need to submit a proposal(s) on UBC CareersOnline. A student can work with a faculty member to submit a proposal together.
  • The Centre for Student Involvement and Careers (CSI&C) to send all research project proposals pertaining to the Faculty/School by February 8, 2023.
  • Deadline for Faculty/School offices to submit their list of funded proposals: February 28, 2023.
  • CSI&C will send funding decisions to faculty members by the week of March 6, 2023.
  • For faculty members who have not indicated an internal candidate for their position(s), it will be posted on UBC CareersOnline for students to apply from March 13 – 26, 2023.
