Dec. 1 – IRES Faculty Seminar with Sara Knox

Topic: Wetlands in a changing world: processes, feedbacks and the climate benefits of wetlands

Speaker: Dr. Sara Knox, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography

This talk presents research that combines field-based measurements, remote sensing, and modelling to provide new insights into the controls of wetland GHG fluxes across a range of spatial and temporal scales and quantify the potential climate benefits of wetland restoration and conservation.

Dec. 6 – CityAge: Scaling Regenerative Agriculture with Sean Smukler

We use 40 percent of the Earth’s land surface for farming. That means our farming practices determine the health of almost half the earth’s land base.

That’s why CityAge and the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food are coming together to explore the potential of regenerative farming on December 6.

Hear speakers outline a number of important topics such as:

  • Defining regenerative farming & exploring what growers think about it
  • Identifying which practices fall under the category of regenerative
  • Scaling and standardizing regenerative agriculture across the industry
  • Maintaining profitability on the farm while adopting these practices
  • How agtech can support and enhance regenerative agriculture

Jan. 21 to Apr. 1 – 2023 Hearing Clinic at UBC SASS

The Audiology Clinic will be led by first year audiology students, under the supervision of a Registered Audiologist Clinical Educator. The clinic will provide hearing assessments to adults 19 years of age and older. Anyone from the UBC and Metro Vancouver communities are eligible to book an appointment. Each assessment is 1.5 hours long, and includes a discussion of the test results and recommendations. If your results indicate you are in need of a medical referral or further services, additional information will be provided to you.

The cost for an examination is $65.00 or at an Affordability Rate of $45.00 (seniors over 60 years; UBC students).

The clinic will run every Saturday, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, starting on January 21, 2023 and concluding on April 1, 2023. Please note: the clinic will be closed February 25, 2023.

The clinic is located on the 3rd floor of the Friedman Building, 2177 Wesbrook Mall. There are paid parking lots adjacent to and nearby the building. See our Contact Us – SASS Audiology Clinic page for more information.

The SASS Audiology Clinic will provide clinical readiness training for our first-year Audiology graduate students prior to the start of their first externship in May 2023. In turn, we are very excited to be providing these affordable hearing services to our UBC and Metro Vancouver communities.

Dec. 4 – Job Posting: Indigenous Research Cluster Coordinator Position

Working in a dynamic and high-energy environment, the Indigenous Research Cluster (IRC) Coordinator will assist with the collection, management, and analysis of Indigenous research within the Faculty of Land and Food Systems and external research partners/collaborators, therefore the coordinator will also support the internal tracking of Indigenous research activities conducted both internal and external to the Faculty.

Dec. 9 – Call for proposals to the Ministry of Health Research Seed Grant Program

The Ministry of Health Research Seed Grant Program provides funding for BC universities to produce research that responds to pertinent health-related questions identified by the ministry. In partnership with the Ministry of Health, the Faculty of Medicine and UBC Health are offering researchers up to $50,000 to carry out a research project.

If you want to generate new research that responds to the Ministry of Health’s current needs, submit a Notice of Intent by 12:00pm on December 9.
