Identify the Student’s Needs Early.
“Joe Cuseo (2011) identified academic disengagement, absenteeism, and mid-semester grades as some of the tangible indicators to warrant intervention for a student. These factors, if found at the right time, have been proven to have a positive effect on student performance in the classroom” (Winfield, 2018).

UBC’s Early Alert helps achieve this goal by helping faculty and staff provide more comprehensive support for students who are facing difficulties that put their academic success at risk. Today – Diversity and Freedom of Inquiry in Academia

Lecture by Akeel Bilgrami, Professor of Philosophy, Columbia University

Part of the Provost’s Lecture Series on Academic Freedom, this lecture will offer a genealogy of current disputes on campus that confront the trade-offs between commitments to greater diversity and commitments to freedom of inquiry. It will identify some of the effects of diversity on academic inquiry, exploring in particular whether the demands of diversity are bringing about a fundamental shift in the very idea of inquiry and pedagogy in the Humanities and the Social Sciences.

Nov. 30 – Decolonizing Wellness: Indigenous Women’s Perspectives on Healthcare

The Dialogue takes place on the one-year anniversary date of the publication of the report “In Plain Sight: Addressing Indigenous-specific Racism and Discrimination in BC Healthcare,” and will bring together 12 Indigenous women in health leadership to reflect on the report’s findings, take stock of where we are now, and explore possible solutions to the ongoing realities of anti-Indigenous racism and sexism within the healthcare landscape. It will be presented in a panel-based format, with presentations, moderated discussions, and opportunities for questions from the audience. Unique perspectives will be provided by Elders, scholars, policy makers, practitioners, and knowledge keepers that have the potential to influence positive change.

The Dialogue is presented in partnership with the First Nations House of Learning, UBC Learning Circle and Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health.
