Support the United Way Bake Sale – Nov. 8

Come by the MacMillan Building (main entrance, first floor) on Tuesday, November 8 from 10:30am to 1:30pm to support the LFS bake sale!

LFS is lucky to have some pretty awesome in-house bakers – treats include pumpkin cranberry loaf, mango tarts, and tapioca pudding! Also, back by popular demand, Wayne’s mochi!

Bring some change ($2 for each item). Funds raised will go towards local projects that support vulnerable people in the community.

Random Acts of Recognition

Congratulations to Random Acts recipient:

Nicole Adoranti, LFS embedded counsellor for her fantastic support of students in our Faculty. Nicole has led several meaningful workshops with dietetics students this year, to support their journey through the Program, and much positive feedback has been received about her one-on-one support for students as well.

To nominate a faculty member, staff or graduate student that’s been doing an outstanding job or has gone above and beyond in some way, send an email to lfs.recognition@ubc.ca and tell us why this person should be recognized, along with their email. We’ll send them a $6 Starbucks gift card and acknowledge their good work in LFS Today.

Nov. 16 – Biosafety Protocol Writing Workshop

On November 16th, The Biosafety team at Safety & Risk Services will be hosting a Biosafety Protocol Writing Workshop. A clear and comprehensive Biosafety permit application will pass through the review process quickly, allowing research funds to be released without delay. A submission that is missing key information or cluttered with unnecessary details may encounter several rounds of provisos to address before research funds are released. This workshop is designed to help protocol writers submit the best possible application for speedy review and approval. Register here. Please contact the SRS Biological and Radiation Safety Advisor for any questions.

Nov. 29 – How Do I Get Started? Creating Safer Learning Environments for Indigenous Students in STEM at UBC

Within this session, we will explore a recently developed resource that responds to commonly asked questions about how STEM faculty can ‘get started’ with “Indigenizing our curriculum’ (UBC ISP Goal #4) and creating safer classroom environments for Indigenous students.

As a group, we will learn about the impetus for this student-partnered resource development, hear from Indigenous students about their experiences in STEM, and discuss how we, both individually and collectively, can foster more inclusive teaching and learning environments.
