Save the Date! LFS Holiday Party

Please mark your calendars for the faculty and staff Holiday party, taking place this year on Monday, Dec. 5 from 3-5 pm. The social committee is meeting this week to plan the event, so further details will be coming soon. In the meantime, save the date!

Call for Nominations – LFS Service Awards – updated deadline

Nominations are now open (https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_b1uAycvz9GZ0Klo) for the Faculty of Land and Food Systems outstanding service awards, including the Shynkaryk Service Award (staff), Richards Service Award (faculty) and Graduate Student Service Award. Please do not email your nominations. The deadline for nominations is Monday, November 28.

LFS Shynkaryk and Richards Awards
Nominees should be LFS staff or faculty members who meet the following criteria: consistently provides excellent service to students, faculty and staff, accomplished tasks with good humour and grace, works extremely well with others, and always goes one step further on every project. Nominations should include the name of the nominator, name of nominee and 3 or more reasons for the nomination (with examples).

LFS Graduate Student Service Award
Nominees should be graduate students who meet the following criteria: provide services and / or leadership to fellow graduate students and the LFS community at large, and serve as exemplars to fellow grad students, faculty and staff or the faculty in general. Nominations should include the name of the nominator, name of nominee and 3 or more reasons for the nomination (with examples).

Today! – Support the United Way Bake Sale

Come by the MacMillan Building (main entrance, first floor) today from 10:30am to 1:30pm to support the LFS bake sale!

LFS is lucky to have some pretty awesome in-house bakers – treats include pumpkin cranberry loaf, mango tarts, and tapioca pudding! Also, back by popular demand, Wayne’s mochi!

Bring some change ($2 for each item). Funds raised will go towards local projects that support vulnerable people in the community.

Nov. 10 – UBC Reads Sustainability: Is there a ‘far-right conspiracy to cover up climate change’?

Join climate investigative journalist and award winning author Geoff Dembicki live from Brooklyn for a conversation which draws from confidential oil industry documents to uncover how companies like Exxon, Koch Industries, and Shell built a global right-wing echo chamber to protect oil sands profits.

Featuring his latest book, The Petroleum Papers: Inside the Far-Right Conspiracy to Cover Up Climate Change. Moderated by Dr. Carol Liao, Associate Professor and Director of the Centre for Business Law at UBC Allard School of Law, and a Principal Co-Investigator of the Canada Climate Law Initiative.

Nov. 12 – Workshop: Spotted Wing Drosophila Parasitoids

This workshop is designed to help researchers to properly identify the parasitoids (biological control agents) that target the invasive spotted wing fruit fly – Drosophila suzukii. This insect is one of the major crop pest in B.C., North America, and Europe.

A total of 38 pre-registered participants across North America will be attending, ahead of the Joint Annual Meeting of the British Columbian, Canadian and American Entomological Societies organized this year in Vancouver, Nov 13-16.

Nov. 13 – Student Leadership Conference Awards

Each year the SLC celebrates outstanding student leaders and organizations through three awards:

  • Nestor Korchinsky Award (1 recipient): Recognizes one individual who has made significant impact in the community and demonstrated outstanding leadership through their initiatives.
  • Showcase Awards (4 recipients): Recognizes a group or an organization for their contributions and impact on or off campus.
  • Faces of Today (8 recipients): Recognizes individuals who have had extensive involvement and commitment to student leadership.

Dec. 1 – Dairy Farmers of Canada Nutrition Research Funding Program – Call for Proposals

Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) is launching its Call for Proposals for the 2024-2025 competition as part of the Nutrition Research Funding Program. Letters of Intent must be submitted no later than December 1st, 2022 for consideration for funding, starting in January 2024, at dairyresearch@dfc-plc.ca.
