Call for Nominations – LFS Service Awards – deadline extension

Nominations are now open (https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_b1uAycvz9GZ0Klo) for the Faculty of Land and Food Systems outstanding service awards, including the Shynkaryk Service Award (staff), Richards Service Award (faculty) and Graduate Student Service Award. Please do not email your nominations. Please note that the the deadline for nominations has been extended to Friday, December 2.

LFS Shynkaryk and Richards Awards
Nominees should be LFS staff or faculty members who meet the following criteria: consistently provides excellent service to students, faculty and staff, accomplished tasks with good humour and grace, works extremely well with others, and always goes one step further on every project. Nominations should include the name of the nominator, name of nominee and 3 or more reasons for the nomination (with examples).

LFS Graduate Student Service Award
Nominees should be graduate students who meet the following criteria: provide services and / or leadership to fellow graduate students and the LFS community at large, and serve as exemplars to fellow grad students, faculty and staff or the faculty in general. Nominations should include the name of the nominator, name of nominee and 3 or more reasons for the nomination (with examples).

December 2022 Exam Locations Now Available

Attention instructors: if you requested a final exam for December 2022, the Final Exam Schedule WITH LOCATIONS is now available in three places:

  1. Online (Tip: leave a space between the course code and number for this to display correctly)
  2. SSC
  3. FSC (If the course has an exam, the date is visible under the class list area. When you select your courses, the exam date is to the right of the instructor name.)

Please review to confirm that any requests are accurately reflected in this schedule and email Melody Wang (lfs.scheduling@ubc.ca) immediately with any mistakes or omissions. It is important that any errors be corrected as soon as possible to avoid confusion and scheduling challenges. Thank you for your cooperation!

Nov. 16 – Larkin Lecture: Critical Freshwater Fish Futures

Topic: Critical Freshwater Fish Futures: using interdisciplinary and arts-based research approaches to engage relationships between Indigenous sovereignty and freshwater fish well-being

Presenter: Dr. Zoe Todd, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Carleton University

This talk provides an overview of the relationships between Indigenous sovereignty and freshwater fish futures in Canada, with an explicit focus on ongoing community-driven interdisciplinary research partnerships in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.

Dec. 2 – Elevating Indigenous Food Systems with Indigenous Dietitian Perspectives

Listen to the wisdom of dietitians Deyowidron’t Teri Morrow and Tatyana Daniels (recent graduate from the Dietetics program), as they share Cayuga and Gitxsan perspectives, focusing on their traditional foods and food systems. It is hoped that this is the first of a series of webinars aiming to elevate and better understand the diversity of wisdom in Indigenous communities and food systems.

This webinar is led by the Indigenous Nutritional Knowledge Information Network of DC and supported by the Sustainable Food Systems, Community and Public Health Nutrition, DOC, Francophone and Student Networks. Learn more about the Networks and join here.

Dec. 31 – 2022 Partnership Recognition & Exploration (PRE) Fund

UBC Community Engagement is accepting applications for the 2022 Partnership Recognition & Exploration (PRE) Fund! Apply for up to $1,500 for community-university collaboration and relationship building.

PRE funding fills small resource gaps and empowers community partners to build reciprocal relationships with UBC students, faculty, and staff.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis from now until December 31, 2022, OR until available funds are exhausted. This year, Community Engagement has a total of $69,000 to fund up to 46 community-university projects (24 projects have already been approved).

UBC students, faculty, staff and community partners are invited to apply!

Jan. 6 – Call for abstracts: Crossroads Interdisciplinary Health Research Conference 2023

Abstract submissions for Crossroads 2023 are now open! Submissions will close on January 6, 2023.

The 19th Annual Crossroads Interdisciplinary Health Research Conference is happening on March 10-11th, 2023 at the Halifax Central Library and Dalhousie University’s Collaborative Health Education Building (CHEB) in Halifax, NS. Crossroads is a student-led health research conference hosted by the School of Health and Human Performance Graduate Student Society.

They will be accepting abstracts for poster and oral presentations from students working on any health-related project, at any stage (e.g., proposal, preliminary analysis, completed),and affiliated with any department (e.g., health professions, business, engineering, social sciences, etc.).
