Kristen Walker spoke about her work in tracking the aggressive behaviour of coyotes in Vancouver’s Stanley Park. On these behaviours stemming from human actions, Kristen says: “We’ve had reports of folks going in with raw chicken and cat food, throwing that in the bushes and trying to draw the coyotes out so they can take photos.”. Until Oct. 31 – UBC United Way Coffee Campaign

Free Coffee, Anybody? Give back to community and get free coffee for a month!  Pledge $5 or more per pay (or $120 or more for a one-time gift) by October 31 and get a coffee card to use in November at some UBC Food Service outlets.

Nov. 2 – Prepare your Pumpkins!

Halloween is coming up and LFS is holding a pumpkin carving contest again to find out who can design the most creative pumpkin. Once again, the main criteria to win is creativity! This will be a vote of your peers, as faculty & staff will vote for the most creative jack-o-lanterns.
 
Here are the rules:

  1. Be creative – to up your pumpkin game, here are some some tips.
  2. You must be the main pumpkin artisan, but you may enlist support from those in your household, especially those who are underage.
  3. Submit a photo of your pumpkin with a CAPTION.
  4. Send your photo & caption to lfs.today@ubc.ca by Tuesday, Nov. 2 (noon).
  5. We will collect photos and open up voting next week!

Nov. 18 – Indigenization, Decolonization and Reconciliation within STEM

Part of the Equity and Inclusion in Action: STEM Series, this session will give you the opportunity to deepen your own engagement with UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan and identify your own actions in terms of research, service and teaching. You will also get to hear from a panel of Indigenous scholars within STEM at UBC and learn more about their work in decolonizing or Indigenizing science and teaching.

Oct. 19 & 30 – Thrive Month

Thrive month is a time each November when we come together as a UBC community to learn about, talk about, and explore mental health, and one way you can participate this year is by hosting an in-person or virtual event. ⁠ 

New this year, up to $300 in funding is available through the Thrive Grant for student groups, departments or units at UBCV who would like to host an event during Thrive month (Nov. 1-30). Visit thrive.ubc.ca for more info. Applications are due by Oct. 19.

Nov. 19 – Funding Opportunities with PepsiCo

PepsiCo is looking to partner with university scientists to reinvent the flavor of coconut water. They are looking to modify the current From Concentrate Coconut Water ingredients to minimize off flavor and the aroma profile making it more neutral in taste, expanding the application potential, and improving juice portfolio margins. Proposal submission deadline is November 19, 2021. Those selected will receive up to $100,000 with the potential for follow-on funding.
 
On Tuesday, October 26, PepsiCo is hosting a webinar. Anyone who might be interested is invited to attend.

 

 

 

Jan. 5 – Lab2Market NSERC Program

Lab2Market (L2M) Program is excited to announce that applications for Lab2Market NSERC program are now live! This program is delivered in partnership with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and is an extension of the Idea to Innovation (I2I) Market Assessment Grant.

This 4-month program offers:

  • Curriculum (lectures, talks, and workshops) designed to introduce researchers to the world of entrepreneurship.
  • An advisor network (founders, industry leaders, and service providers) to help researchers through their business venture. 
  • A community of like-minded entrepreneurs.
  • $20,000 in funding to support researchers in getting their idea off the ground.
  • The opportunity for future funding through the NSERC I2I Phase I grant. 

The first cohort is scheduled to run in March 2022 with applications closing on January 5th, 2022. To apply please visit the application page.

Feb. 1 – Students as Partners Fund

The Students as Partners (SaP) fund provides Students as Partners in Course Design grants.  Funded through the Student Support Initiative, these grants support UBC Vancouver undergraduate students working in partnerships with faculty to redesign UBCV undergraduate courses. Students as Partners in Course Design partnerships position students as collaborators in the academic mission of the University.
 
The online proposal will be available on Jan 20, 2022 with a deadline on Feb 1, 2022. Please refer to https://sap.ubc.ca/ for more information.
