CTLT Session: Navigating Open Educational Resources Learning Modules: It’s not just “Just Food”

The pandemic and international racial injustices have heightened the need for instructors to embed topics related to equity, justice and anti-oppression into their courses to increase learner capacity (or competency) to engage with these topics, but many are unsure how to do this. The Just Food project explores social justice issues by employing food as a pedagogical tool to connect theoretical understandings and terminology to elements of the day-to-day.

This session will highlight the following:

  • How to navigate the Just Food website and access resources housed on it
  • Identify ways educators can engage with the online resources
  • Suggest methods to use and adapt the modules for use in educator’s (virtual) classrooms

The Just Food project website includes seven learning modules on various food systems themes (such as a food justice primer, migrant labour, indigenous foodways, international development) and a facilitator’s guide. Each learning module contains a backgrounder on the theme, suggested learning outcomes, sample readings and discussion questions, in-depth activity instructions, and examples of assessments. The learning modules are suitable for adaptation across many disciplines, including agriculture, food studies, nutrition, geography, sociology, anthropology, education, planning, political sciences, and more.

Facilitators:

  • Rachel Cheang, Just Food Project Assistant
  • Meryn Corkery, Just Food Project Assistant

UBC Apple Market is Now Online

Many beloved events have been reimagined this year due to the ongoing pandemic, including the UBC Apple Festival. This season, the Friends of the UBC Botanical Garden have turned the UBC Apple Festival into the UBC Apple Market, an online shop featuring favourite varieties of apples, trees, juice, and more.

How it works

  1. Place your online orders at any time here; and select an on-site pick-up time at the UBC Botanical Garden.
  2. Collect your goodies between October 16-18.
  3. Enjoy your purchase!

This year’s apple selection will focus on festival favourites, including Cox’s Orange Pippin, a favourite for pie baking, and Red Rome, a beautiful bright red apple that stores well until March. At this year’s Market, 5,000 lbs (2268 kg) of BC-grown apples are expected to be available for sale online. All apples this year are organic.

Call for Proposals: Climate Action and Awareness Fund

The new Climate Action and Awareness Fund will invest $206 million over five years to support Canadian-made projects that help to reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions. The Climate Action and Awareness Fund is designed to support projects that can create middle class jobs for Canadians who work in science and technology, academia and at the grassroots community level. These projects are critical as we continue to build a sustainable net zero emissions economy by 2050.

The Climate Action and Awareness Fund has three main priorities:

  • support youth climate awareness (request for proposals – closed summer 2020) and community-based climate action (request for proposals – fall 2020—this call)
  • support climate research at Canadian think tanks and in academia (still to come: request for proposals – winter 2021)
  • advance climate science and technology (still to come: request for proposals – winter 2021)

The Climate Action and Awareness Fund was created with contributions from the existing Climate Action Fund, as well as a significant investment from the Environmental Damages Fund.

Community-based climate action projects
Launched September 17, 2020, the request for proposals for community-based climate action projects will provide knowledge, tools and/or skills that lead to or engage communities in climate action. This request for proposals will provide from $100,000 to $6 million to eligible organizations, for a total of up to $50 million over five years.
