Teaching Theory Thursday

Prior to the first day of class, post some information about who you are as a person. Create a text-based page with one or more still photos or develop a video to show students something about your life and interests. Reveal your personality throughout the semester by interacting with students in your authentic voice.”

Deadlines

Sept. 2 – Join the LFS Social Committee – create a ‘buzz’ at LFS events!

As the summer winds down and we look forward to the start of term, we’re looking for individuals interested in spearheading our LFS Social Committee! Do you like to socialize and mingle with colleagues? Want more events where we can break bread with your co-workers? Those interested in helping to create, plan or organize our Faculty social events can contact either Barbara Hsiao (Barbara.hsiao@ubc.ca) or Karen Lee (Karen.lee98@ubc.ca). Current events include the Faculty/Staff Sports Day, the Faculty’s Holiday Party, and the first order of buzz-i-ness will be our LFS Welcome Back Fall event. Given the overwhelming success of the Welcome Back event last year at UBC Farm, we are looking for keen individuals to help out again. Let’s reinforce why we’re known as the Friendly Faculty!

Contact Barbara or Karen before Friday, Sept.2 to get involved in the LFS Social Committee.

Sept. 15 – Faculty Research Awards – call for nominations

UBC recognizes individual investigators who demonstrate excellence in research through a suite of seven annual research awards and fellowships that span all disciplines in the applied sciences, medicine, and social sciences and humanities.

Summary of changes in 2022:

  • The Killam Accelerator Research Fellowship and Killam Faculty Research Fellowship have new optional sections on Contextual Perspective (to provide understanding of the context of career trajectory or field of research) and Research Impact (to account for wide variations in the impacts of research across different disciplines, as well as in the indicators used to measure them).
  • Many award components have requested word limits rather than page limits.
  • There is a single nomination form for all awards, rather than a separate form for each one.

These awards have two nomination stages:

  1. Expression of Intent (EOI) due Thursday, September 15, 2022, 11:59 pm. This optional stage assists in planning and nominations can still be submitted if the EOI deadline is missed. Note: EOI not requested for Killam Accelerator Research Fellowships given the required Faculty-led nomination process.
  2. Full Nomination due Tuesday, November 15, 2022, 11:59 pm. All required components must be submitted through the nomination form, and Killam Faculty Research Fellowship referee letters must be received by ORPA.

Please also consult the FAQs and contact them with any questions: research.prizes@ubc.ca.
