RSVP for LFS Welcome back event this Friday, Sept. 23!

If you haven’t already, register for this Friday’s Welcome Back Event – register by 5pm today to be eligible for draw prizes!

The Faculty is once again hosting a kick-off event to mark the new school year together. LFS faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students are invited to attend. The popular food trucks will make a return this year, so bring your appetites!

We encourage you to also bring a picnic blanket as the event takes place at UBC Farm – and it will go forward, rain or shine!

Sept. 22 – IRES Faculty Seminar with Tongli Wang

Topic: Climate and ecological models for forest adaptation to climate change

Abstract:
The impacts of climate on forest ecosystems have been observed in different aspects, including large-scale diebacks, increased pest and disease infections, and intensified forest fires. A major cause of these problems is due to the mismatch between the climate that trees have adapted to in the past and the climate that the trees are experiencing now and in the future due to climate change. Ecological models can be used to predict such mismatches at the ecosystem/species (ecological niche models) and the population (population response functions) levels. The model predictions can help develop adaptive strategies based on the available genetic resources created by nature. The quality of climate data can substantially affect the credibility of those models. My talk will brief on our research in developing scale-free climate models, ecological niche models, response functions, and landscape genomic models.

Oct. 3 – Job Posting: Workday Student Project Manager Position

UBC is embarking on a multi-year project to transform its academic and administrative support processes and systems environments for the entire UBC community with “Workday Student” projected to be implemented fall 2024. The vision for the Workday Student Program https://irp.ubc.ca/resources/student is to transform the way UBC supports learning and research, and how UBC can work to create a cohesive and integrated experience for students, staff, and faculty. The Project Manager is responsible for managing and overseeing projects for the development and implementation of all aspects of Workday Student within the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, Forestry and Applied Science. This will involve significant change management as this role will be working with very diverse academic disciplines, each with unique identities, values, and sizes with long standing practices based on pedagogical objectives and education mission. Significant prep work will be required to bring the Faculties into alignment for transition Workday due to the complexity of each Faculty’s degree paths.

Oct. 24 – Apply for funding for the operation, maintenance, replacement, repair or upgrade of facilities and research equipment shared by three or more principal investigators

The 2022 Research Facility Support Grants (RFSG) competition is open to faculty located at the UBC Vancouver campus and affiliated hospital sites. It provides one-year grants of up to $50,000 intended to enhance UBC research, training, and equipment sustainability. Funding may be used to cover materials, supplies, replacement of broken parts, and minor upgrades essential to the operation and maintenance of the facility or shared equipment, as well as bridge funding for salaries of research support staff employed to operate and maintain the facility and provide assistance to users.

The application deadline is October 24, 2022.
