LFS in the News

Jennifer Black was featured in an article about new research examining the link between food worry and mental health during the pandemic. As one of the paper’s authors, Jennifer shared: “This study echoes a growing body of evidence that clearly shows that far too many Canadians worry that they don’t have stable access to enough food to meet their household’s basic needs. It also reflects the important overlaps between several of our most pressing public health challenges including poverty, inadequate and inequitable access to food, and poor mental health.” UBC News

Lunch & Learn Series: Teaching in a Blended Classroom – TODAY

This session will be held TODAY at noon. Dr. Jerzy Zawistowski (Academic Director, Master of Food Science Program) will be our guest presenter this week.

Despite the shift back to in-person teaching, some students have been unable to attend class, and as such, instructors have recorded or streamed their lectures. Teaching to both an in-class and remote audience can be a tremendous challenge. This week, Jerzy Zawistowski will present his experiences teaching to a “hybrid” live and remote audience. He’ll discuss tools such as Collaborate Ultra, MS Teams and Zoom, and the best practices he’s developed to meet his course’s learning objectives.

The Lunch & Learn sessions can now also be attended in-person at MCML 350. Come join us this Friday virtually or in-person to discuss a hybrid approach to lecturing. To register for this session, please visit https://ubc.zoom.us/meeting/register/u5cscumsqDwrG9OI5NHXco_FeqnmI0pzdWM1

The 94 TRC Calls to Action: A Participatory Reading

On September 29th, to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Day (Sept 30th), we invite you to join us for a participatory reading of the 94 Calls to Action from the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission.  This document is foundational to the process of reconciliation in Canada and is a critical document for all to engage with. Through this reading, we will together make audible these Calls to Action.  We undertake this as one step toward engagement with implementation of the Indigenous Strategic Plan.

We are looking for 94 people to each read one of the 94 Calls in this event.  Both readers and listeners are welcome. Dean Rickey Yada will be helping open the session and reading a Call to Action. To sign up to attend, and/or to read one of the Calls to Action at this event, please register here: TRC 94 Calls to Action Registration Form
