Hurricane Fiona – support services

Across the University community there may potentially be many employees that are personally impacted due to family and/or friends living in Atlantic Canada and Eastern Quebec. Many are without power and have lost homes and have been displaced due to the flooding, high winds and storm surges. For any UBC employees needing Employee Family Assistance, please contact the following support services:

  • UBC provided Mental Health Supports – Employee & Family Assistance Plan (Lifeworks) and Extended Health Benefits Plan (Sun Life)
  • EFAP – Employee & Family Assistance Program
    • Provides short-term counselling using a variety modalities including:
      • In-person counselling
      • Telephonic counselling
      • First chat – online or mobile
      • E-counselling – secure email
      • Video counselling

Sept. 30 – All-Day Sacred Fire Ceremony at the xʷcı̓cəsəm Garden

The Indigenous Research Partnership, Faculty of Land and Food Systems, and The First Nations House of Learning invite you to an All-Day Sacred Fire Ceremony at xʷci̓cəsəm Garden at UBC Farm, as one way to acknowledge, commemorate and appreciate the Canadian National Day of Truth and Reconciliation (TRC).

The All-Day Sacred Fire Ceremony will honour the spirits of the lost children who never returned home, residential school survivors, their families, and their communities. And provide an opportunity for all to recognize and commit to reconciliation, and ensure that the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools are never forgotten.

Where: xʷci̓ cəsəm Garden at UBC Farm – 3461 Ross Drive, Vancouver
When: Friday, September 30, 2022
Time: Fire starts at Sunrise (7:11) and ends at Sunset (6:53)

You are welcome to make fire offerings, sing and drum, send prayers, share experiences, and reflect on your support for the TRC and advocacy. This event is outdoor, free and open to everyone. No photos or pictures are to be taken at the sacred fire.

Sept. 30 – Active research funding opportunities

The submission deadline for all calls is September 30. One-page proposals can be submitted online via the Halo application form which should take less than an hour to complete. If you have any questions, please reach out to James Wang, Development Officer at j.wang@ubc.ca

Nov. 10 – UBC Health awards and scholarships competition

The competition for the 2022 UBC Health Awards and Scholarships is now open. The deadline for nominations and applications is November 10, 2022.

Through its awards and scholarships, UBC Health recognizes the academic and research excellence of faculty and students from various health disciplines at UBC and the achievements of health educators, professionals, and community partners across British Columbia.

Awards are open to faculty, health educators, professionals, and community partners in health who have made significant contributions to the advancement of health education and practice:

  • John McNeill Excellence in Health Research Mentorship Award
  • John F. McCreary Prize for Interprofessional Teamwork
  • Award for Excellence in Interprofessional Teaching and Learning
  • Practice Education Team Award
  • R. Paul Kerston Community Educator Award

Scholarships are open to current UBC students in any health or human services degree program:

  • ImpactBC Scholarships in Health Care Research and Development
  • John H. V. Gilbert Interprofessional Scholarship
  • Professor Jessie Gordon MacCarthy Memorial Scholarship

Dec. 12 – Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

Two types of SoTL support are available to faculty members:

  • The SoTL Seed Program: Provides graduate research specialists, collegial collaborations and complementary funding for projects that explore the impact of their pedagogical choices.
