LFS Curriculum Change – Sept. 18 Deadline

Time again to submit any Curriculum Change Proposals you are considering.

Proposals can include a variety of changes to an LFS course or program, from changing the title of a course to adding a new program.

The steps listed below are required prior to submitting your proposal.

Forward your Curriculum Change requests to Virginia Frankian, cc Sandra Brown by Sept 18, 2022.

LFS Curriculum Change Process

  • Create the proposal using the Curriculum Proposal Form (2-Column form). You can find the guidelines here. See especially Appendix E.

Members of the LFS Curriculum Committee representing your disciplinary group can provide guidance and feedback prior to submitting your proposal form to the Committee. See Members list in the LFS Intranet here.

  • Get approval from your disciplinary group (e.g., applied animal biology, food science, food and resources economics group, etc.) followed by your corresponding Program (APBI, FRE, and FNH etc.). Graduate programs (e.g., SOIL, PLNT, HUNU, etc.) need to approve curriculum changes for their course codes. Cat 1 changes should be circulated and discussed prior to voting, while simpler Cat 2 changes may be decided by e-vote.
  • Submit the approved forms – following program approval, curriculum change forms should be compiled and submitted as a package to the LFS Curriculum Committee via Virginia Frankian (virginia.frankian@ubc.ca , cc sandra.brown@ubc.ca before the cut-off date. If needed, the Curriculum Committee will return the proposal to the originator for clarification or revision.
  • Proposals approved by the Committee will be presented to the LFS Faculty Council at its next meeting for approval.
  • Category 1 changes (e.g., new course and new degree program): a proposal approved by the Faculty Council typically requires external unit and library consultation, and budgetary approval. Subsequently, the proposal will be submitted to the Senate Curriculum Sub-committee, then to the Senate Curriculum Committee and finally to the Senate for approval.
  • Category 2 changes: a proposal approved by the Faculty Council will be submitted to the relevant Senate Curriculum Sub-Committee for approval.

The Curriculum Proposal review and approval process is a long one, especially for Category 1 changes. Items may be sent back to the originator for corrections at any level. Some Proposals require consultations with parties outside UBC.

For these reasons, it is important to plan and submit your proposal as early as possible.

Tech Tip Tuesday: Backing up Zoom cloud recordings

If you want to re-use Zoom cloud recordings in another term, it’s a good idea to download them to ensure you have a copy for future use. A retention policy for Zoom recording storage is being developed and reviewed by UBC. For now, the recordings will remain on the Zoom cloud for at least one year.

To ensure you can share your past Zoom cloud recordings, download the videos and upload them to Kaltura (https://www.learning.video.ubc.ca). Kaltura doesn’t have storage limits, so you’ll be able to share videos to your Canvas course, or elsewhere, at a later date.

Sept. 15 – LFS Internal Research Grant Program (IRGP) 2022 Application

The Faculty of Land and Food Systems Internal Research Grant Program (IRGP) provides short-term support for the development of innovative, multidisciplinary research that will eventually form the basis of a research proposal submitted to one of the Tri-Agency funding organizations (i.e. NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC) or the UBC TLEF program. The overall aim of the IRGP is to identify and support innovative, early-stage research within LFS which will enable preliminary data to be gathered for the purpose of strengthening the calibre and competitiveness of research proposals submitted to the Tri-Agency and TLEF funding competitions from LFS.

The LFS IRGP encourages collaborative multidisciplinary submissions: this year’s IRGP also aims to spark new collaborations with units and faculties external to LFS, hence applicant teams must be comprised of a lead PI from LFS and at least one other co-applicant from outside LFS with whom the PI has never worked before. The lead, and at least one other co-applicant, must be full-time LFS faculty members with a minimum of 12-month appointments.

This year’s IRGP applications must address one or more of the five priority areas from the current LFS Action Plan, Navigating Change: Addressing climate change and resilient food systems; Ending hunger and improving food security; Enhancing regional agriculture for sustainable cities; Promoting nutrition and wellbeing for healthier communities; Ensuring the health and welfare of animals in society.

Support will only be provided for the direct costs of research that are essential to the completion of the proposed research, including: stipend and salary support for undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, research-related travel, and material supplies or consumables. This year’s IRGP applications must include support for at least one undergraduate student.

Applications (application form plus all attachments submitted as a single PDF file) for this funding call should be sent to lfs.research@ubc.ca by Monday, September 15 at 5pm.

Full details on the IRGP program including the Application Form can be found here.
