Thank you and Farewell Sofia Antoniou – our operations and safety assistant!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sofia Antoniou, our operations and safety assistant work learn student, for her tremendous support and contributions over the summer. Sofia has been instrumental to the LFS operations team in all the safety related work, conducting office and laboratory inspections in both MCML and FNH, cleaning and reorganizing laboratory space, walk in cold room and freezer space in the FNH pilot plant facility, processing weekly the LFS General Guide submissions ensuring all the training requirements are up-to-date, updating the safety data sheets for our research and teaching labs to meet WorkSafeBC standards, and many more. Besides the safety aspects, Sofia is also very artistic, helping us design many posters for use in the general building area and in laboratory spaces. She has also supported the development of vehicle user video, from preparing the scripts and slide decks, recording the clips, to editing the voice over, making sure that all the important faculty vehicle policy, user etiquette and responsibilities are included for our vehicle users.

Sofia will be leaving our faculty to embark a new adventure in Pharmacy. I wish her all the best as she continues to enjoy her journey at UBC.

Random Acts of Recognition

Congratulations to Random Acts of Recognition recipient:

Dan Naidu, who has been going above and beyond for a number of weeks helping sort out an admin issue. He has jumped in and gone well out of his way to help sort everything out. Dan has many different competing priorities, so his attention and care is extra appreciated.

To nominate a faculty member, staff or graduate student that’s been doing an outstanding job or has gone above and beyond in some way, send an email to lfs.recognition@ubc.ca and tell us why this person should be recognized. We’ll send them a $6 Starbucks gift card and acknowledge their good work in LFS Today

Teaching Theory Thursday

Have students reflect and respond to learning objectives. “Asking students to respond to the learning objectives also ensures that they know what the objectives say and mean, or alerts you to the need to clarify the objectives if the students struggle to articulate their response.”

– Darby & Lang, 2019, Small Teaching Online, p. 19

Brought to you by The Learning Centre.
